I assumed that's what it was when it first appeared. I thought that the catalyst was some sort of targeting technology that allowed you to set it to only affect Reapers, and what would allow you to chose whether to control or destroy them.
The crucible being a big gun to shoot reapers with would have been 100 times better

It should've been the space version of the atomic bomb. With Shepard's knowledge of earth's history, it would've been a nice moral dilemma whether or not to unleash this unforeseen technology. (Maybe if your EMS was crappy, this would be the only way to stop the Reapers)
Because once it is set, there's no going back. It would've paved a nice 'alternative' ending. Turians and Salarians engaging in a cold war to counteract the Krogans (if the genophage was cured, even more of a reason)
Thessia would've been like Germany after WWI with their Prothean beacon incident... They'd be given limits to what they could do... And maybe among them rises a leader (Hitler/Stalin style dictator, or Jean D'arc savior style). I would actually would love to see an Asari dictator. That would be a great character for ME4... (If there is one)
Bleh... I'm wasting my breath.. The damage is already done.
There is this however.

+1 vote for reaper killing space gun. I don't care if it's cliche, the fight to build it was long and hard enough that we deserved the satisfaction.

It would have been a million times more fitting and Bioware didn't have to butcher the reapers like they did.
It may have been cliche but it would have been a hell of an ending. Shepard and Anderson sitting side by side just watching Reapers being blown up. Heck they could have blown up the Citadel with Anderson and Shepard on it and it would then make it dramatic, sad, but still awesome. A ultimate sacrifice ending.

Should've been a huge gun that took the reapers shields down then the remaining forces pound at them, bam bam bam bam booooooooooooooooooooooooom bam bam bam bam booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. Then Shepard goes on parades and visits the destroyed homeworlds after the epilogue, but noooooooooo apparently making bad endings is a great idea.

It was hinted at the entire time. So I dont see why it wasnt. When they said the Citadel was the Catalyst it made sense; creating a array for the Crucible to target the Reapers.

The problem with that ending is that it still would not have been enough. And would of been dumb.

the derelict reaper, one of a million plot holes that we never got an answer to.....
How is it a plot hole?
We just don't know which cycle killed it, or how big the gun was.

In the final "ship battle" cut scene a few Reapers get taken out before they even get to earth. It's likely that, although a cycle has never united like this before, the combined military might of a race or two could have taken one out with concentrated fire before being devastated.
