Mass Effect was MORE than a game.

I don't think these people understand Mass Effect is more than just a game to many of us, it's like saying Star Wars was just movies. For many ME was a positive influence on their life, the ultimate escapism, when we felt down we could escape into the carefully crafted world we had built for ourselves. We read every codex entry, every book, every comic, we listened to every squadmates dialouge in every game over and over quoting them from time to time. We grew attached to all of these characters including our LI's, we wanted to solve all of their problems and stand by them until the end. It wasnt so much about the shooting space monsters as it was about the attachments we had grown to the universe, our Shepard, and our squadmates. It's why so many people cosplay and write fan fiction, they love the universe and what it meant to them, it was MORE than just a game to them.
So when the endings hit EVERYONE had their own idea of what they expected. And I'm not talking about a "happy fluffy ending", but I'll get to why that complaint is dumb later. I think pretty much everyone expected there to be losses and sacrifices and that in the end Shepard probably wouldnt make it out. But what I think what EVERYONE did expect is closure, NOT answers but CLOSURE. As in we get to find out what happens to our squadmates, our LI's, what our decisions did to the universe, how the Krogan and Turians fared off or the Geth and Quarians. We werent so interested in the mystery of the Reapers as much as we were interested in how everything would turn out once it was all over. In essence "Would we live happily ever after with Liara?" was more important than "Where did the Reapers come from?"
The endings took that way from many of us, the very thing we loved about ME, the characters. We wanted to know what happened to everyone and in the end we were told nothing, not even what happened to our LI. And in the end all of those countless hours spent on past games trying to get the "perfect" ending were useless as they had no impact on the end. The endings took away our choice and our freedom. I think if someone wants a "happy ending" then they should have been able to obtain it. Afterall it is what they worked so hard to get to, so if someone wanted to ride off into the sunset with Liara I dont see how that is a problem. But again its not the lack of fluffy endings its the lack of closure to a universe we had helped craft.
If in the end none of our decisions mattered and our squad mates stories werent important, well then what was the point? Why do we care? I hope this clarifies to those that dont understand why many are upset over a "stupid video game."

Mass Effect is a game, and a great one at that, but also a story. And you don't mess with a good story, even if you created it.

It seems there a lot of those out there that view us people who depise the ending as "stupid fanboys, who have no life, and should move on. Afterall it is JUST a game."

I'm trying to keep things in perspective, but I don't think I've ever been so badly disserviced by a company in my life. The ending is a strange time to take the RPG element out of a game where the RPG element was the governing force in how events unfolded.
I enjoyed Dragon Age II despite its flaws, and defended it from criticism, but this goes beyond the pale. The ending sucked all of the joy and fun out of the most beloved and popular RPG series of the decade. Fans won't be able to play through any part of the series or make any moral decision in any of the games without thinking about where they are heading and how meaningless all of the themes and choices were.

No it would be like if at the end of Harry Potter, right before Harry kills Voldemort, Voldemort cast a spell that destroys the entire Earth and then the book just ends. Then you would be like, wtf none of this even mattered at all! Thats what the end of Mass Effect feels like to me.
I feel as if this is a more appropriate metaphor.

What happened to everybody on the Normandy? What happened to all the fleets? Relay explosions?
I guess I was hoping for there to be a "good" ending where Shepard lives and it ends with a lengthy cinematic revolving around a "wrap up" and your character's LI.
