Ok, let me go on record as saying the endings in ME3 were disappointing after the endings in ME1&2 but they weren’t horrible. Now having said there is area of serious improvements that that could have been done to the ending to make the player feel like they did more during the game then end up with the three choices that really just feel like one. This is what I came up with as an idea so have fun with it.
ENDING 1
The End is Near
This is the ending you would receive if you don’t have enough military strength and are not going to win.
After Shepard kills the Illusive Man we see the Alliance fleet escorting in the Crucible towards the Citadel, Shepard on his perch watches as it gets closer. Flash back to space we see the Reapers closing in on the Crucible and the fleet fighting them off, switch to inside the Normandy and Joker is working feverishly at the controls as the Normandy is in the battle, the screen goes white as panels erupt in flames. Back to Shepard, he sees the Normandy get destroyed, in the background is the Destiny Ascension of fire crashing and burning and soon after the Crucible with it, Shepard falls to his knees as the Citadel begins to close and the last thing we see is the Earth on fire as the Citadel arms seal shut. The End.
ENDING 2
At What Price
This ending would be if you are just over the minimum to win on military strength.
We pick up again after Shepard kills the Illusive Man. The Alliance fleet is joined by elements of Taurian fleet and Asari fleet. As the Reapers draw closer we see the Normandy leading the charge clearing out the Reapers with the Destiny Ascension coming in to lend its powerful guns to keep the path clear. The Crucible attaches to the Citadel and Shepard is taken up into it. The conversation goes on with the Catalyst child and instead of you making a decision the child scans Shepard’s brain a reverse of what the Protean beacons did. It goes over the choices Shepard has done during the game and the Catalyst decides that it will allow organic life to continue past this cycle but remove the technology that is the lifeline of all the organic races. There is a massive power build up in the Crucible as Shepard who is released from the transfer collapse onto the ground. As Shepard slowly rearranges himself into a seated position looking out from the middle of the Crucible to Earth. The energy is discharged and right behind it the Citadel starts detonating and coming apart, on Earth the energy wave passes over the Reapers as they shut down and start exploding. Then off to the self-destruction of the Mass Relay. The Normandy and most of the fleet are caught in the energy discharge and are destroyed. The last thing Shepard sees is the explosions of the Reapers on Earth as the Citadel and Crucible explode.
ENDING 3
Life will find a way.
This would probably be the most common ending, giving about half military power to win the game.
We pick this up as Shepard has his brain scanned and we see all the choices. The Catalyst decides to blow up all the Mass Effect technology again sending life into the stone ages of space travel again. Shepard of course realizes this is bad and will result is the deaths almost as many as the Reapers have killed. He rips open a panel and finds a control conduit where he is able to interface his damaged Omni Tool. We cut to the outside as the fleet is surrounded by the Reapers and then down to Earth as the Reapers and forcing the combined forces back. Shepard hacks the Crucible to not destroy the Mass Relays or the Citadel but just as he is about to program the Reapers not to explode just to shut down the energy discharge fires, sending a bolt of energy into Shepard from the conduit. We pan out from the Citadel as the energy wave strikes the warships nearby, the Reapers shut down and explode the Normandy is damaged and begins falling into the atmosphere and of course on the planet itself we see the Reapers shutting down and exploding. Flash back to the Citadel and Shepard is on the floor he raises his head just enough to see the end result, a smile flashes across his face as he lowers his head and his eye close. The Normandy is fighting its way through the atmosphere barely controlled Joker manages to miss the falling debris and crash lands at the edge of a canyon, the Grand Canyon as the squad mates you didn’t take with you in the end start exiting the struck craft. The sun starts rising over the west and….. The End.
ENDING 4
Meet at the Bar
This would be the ending that you get if you waited till you had a powerful enough military to take on the Reapers.
We pick this up again just after Shepard gets scanned, the images flash by again and end with the Legion and Tali working together and EDI being with the crew. The Catalyst decides that maybe this cycle deserves a chance to follow its own destiny. The power in the core starts to build up as Shepard is released and collapses onto the deck. Outside we see the Normandy and fleet battling the Reapers this time they are holding their own for the moment, EDI informs Joker that there is a massive energy buildup near Commander Shepard so Joker radios the fleet and says he is going in for Shepard. The Normandy then peels off from the fleet and starts heading to the Citadel, the fleet moves to cover him and burn a path through. Back on the Citadel Shepard is sitting facing out, he can see the Reapers suffering some loses and a smile creeps onto his face and then he goes slack appearing dead. Back on the Normandy we see the ship weaving through debris as the energy discharge can start to be seen in the Crucible time is ticking away. The screen is black and we hear a familiar voice calling to Shepard, it is Anderson he is alive and trying to wake up Shepard. Slowly Shepard’s eyes open, the Normandy is pulling up as close as it can get to the Crucible. Anderson helps Shepard up and they start moving as fast as they can to the Normandy. They get to the gap and jump over to the Normandy’s airlock and the door closes. Joker hears the Commander is on board and they take off as fast as the ship can go just as the energy discharge releases from the Citadel. After we look outside and the Citadel disappears from Earth’s orbit, as the energy wave passes over the Reapers they stop the attack and take off. The Normandy is still caught in the energy wave and crash lands on a tropical island on Earth just as the Sun rises in the west on a new day….. The End.
You can have some other variations based on if you were more renegade I was thinking more paragon. Maybe the end the decision the Catalyst comes up with is that all Synthetic life must be wipe out but the organic life must remain and we still have the Reapers detonating all across the world which if you think about it would be really bad.
I am sure Bioware has plans for the future of the franchise and somehow these endings fit with that. However leaving the Mass Relays doesn’t really hurt anything the races will have to deal with each other and there are many things that can be done with the universe. You need a new super bad guy, hell Cerberus was damn ridiculously powerful for a terrorist group you could have a whole series based on fighting them.
Anyway have fun with it, say what you think is good or bad. Add onto other possible endings that might have missed here.
My ideas for endings (warning long post)
