"Life isn't all rainbows and unicorns."
As said elsewhere, do not mistake depressing for depth. Sad is not inherently better.
"It's just a game."
Everyone's already mentioned the hours and time devoted to the game. The ME series stands apart from many other games in that it is equally as entitled as a book, movie, or artwork. Because the video game medium (and specifically ME) incorporates player actions, it's very disingenuous to make an analogy: "Movie X had a bad ending." It's narrow-minded to simply assume that your experience of the game must be that of others, and that others could not have had a strong emotional connection to it.
Would you call that coloring book you filled out in elementary school just a book? Would you call the Bible just a book? Obviously, those are two wildly differing examples, but the point is that the offhand, "It's just a Y" doesn't mean anything.
"It's about the journey, not the destination."
In this case, the
destination invalidates the journey. With ME, the whole series revolved
around the ending. This was supposed to be the culmination of 3 game's
worth of decision and action. It's quite pithy to say this, but it
doesn't make sense. If the saying were really true, why don't we just
get rid of endings in whatever books, movies, games? Certain video games can have qualities that make the destination just as important, or if not more, like in ME. Remember that this
saying is designed for life, not for an artistic medium.
"You just don't understand."
This line of reasoning is simply a straight up ad hominem attack rather than looking at the analysis of the ending. If BioWare ends up brushing aside our efforts with this excuse, it will seem very pretentious and wishy-washy.
"You're just a fanboy." With insinuations of being subjective.
Another ad hominem attack. Emotional connection to an artful medium exists to various degrees regardless of your devotion to a game or company; rather, a strong connection may cause devotion, so it goes the other way around.
"We won't change anything so stop trying."
This pessimistic statement is rather silly; it's not your right to force your own opinions of futility on everyone else. You are not the Starchild VI. It's, of course, fine to have and argue an opinion, but there should be an argument, not rehashings of how this 'ruckus' we're making is pointless. Maybe Shepard should just have given up and let the Reapers win, since it was such a long shot.
In the mega-thread, there was a whole list of compiled reasons why people dislike the endings, but I couldn't find it. That would be good to look at too.
