I don't care that the game won't support it.   In my mind, this is how Mass Effect ends for me.

Shepard tries to talk the glowing child out of his 3 horrible options, to allow the Galaxy to chose it's own course naturally.   Shepard took Legion's words to heart... she does not want a future given to her by the reapers (or the catalyst), she wants the freedom to make her own future.    Assuming the Catalyst does not budge despite shepards charisma, she spits her defiance in it's face and refuse to make a choice.   She tries to find a way to destroy the Catalyst and it's machinary, but weak and with only a pistol, fails and eventually dies.

The Reapers are too strong for the combined fleets of the galaxy, and eventually, everyone dies.

But we refused to bow to the Reaper's or the Catalyst's dictates, and allowed neither to rule our future - even if it ment sacrificing that future.

We died being blown up in the vacuume of space, where are bodies could not be harvested.

We killed many reapers - more then could be made by harvesting this cycle - the next cycle, the reapers will be weaker - maybe weak enough that a united galaxy can defeat them openly, without having to rely on the false hopes of a deus ex super weapon.

Liara's boxes planted around the galaxy provides the seeds for the next cycle to have a better chance at defying the reapers AND the catalyst.

It's not a happy ending, it's not a light sunshiney ending.   But it's an ending where Shepard does not meekly accept the Reaper's Ultimatum - and just because they offer 3 flavors of the future they envision, does not make their offered endings any less of an ultimatum.     Shepard died rather then surrendering control of the Galaxy and all live in it's future, and that's an ending I can live with.

I'd sooner go for that than to bow to a damn Reaper lord's demands.
