I love Mass Effect 3.
Its combat is awesome, the guns are all well balanced, the powers feel great, its magnitudes ahead of stuff like Modern Warfare or Battlefield.
I love how it streamlined a shooter and a RPG, combining them into a greater sum of their parts.
Every moment of the game I was engaged.
But of course. The ending.
I honestly did not get why those were the only choices a most likely near omniscient AI could give me.
I mean sure, some endings are made out to be worse then others, but all of them present a very bleak future for the galaxy. The Mass Effect relays, all of them evidently, are destroyed, each one likely releasing a shockwave very much like the Alpha relay did, devastating the system around them and making wide stretches of habitable parts of the Galaxy unlivable.
The Krogan had a bright future, and for the first time were cooperating with other races.
Thessia was devastated before, now it would most likely be completely destroyed.
And so on, all across the places we know and love, the characters and races we have bonded with will be wiped out by the explosions.
So I ask this, why weren't there more alternatives?
Even at the end, it gave you choices, but they were all pretty much the same result.
I thought I might add a few alternatives to what a certain AI had offered.
-Calibrating the Crucible to target Reaper's specifically.
This would be similar to the destroy ending, only instead of destroying all synthetic life in the galaxy, it would only target pure Reapers and their Thralls. I envisioned that this would be accomplished by aquiring the Reaper control signal at the Cerberus base or something.
-Convincing the Citadel AI to shut down the control signal permanently.
This is the one that bothered me. Shepard has talked down opponents before, and I do get that he was severely wounded and came very close to being indoctrinated.
But why couldn't he convince the AI that life can change, and that not all Synthetics wanted to destroy their creators. Look at the Geth, they reacted purely out of self defense while the ancient Quarians over-reacted.
Now those are what I think would have been good endings. Although the best one would have been that the Reapers were destroyed permanently, the Citadel was saved, the Mass Relays were saved, everyone was still alive, but there would be a lot of rebuilding to be done.
Also it offers no explanation as to what happens to the squad members you take with you on the final push to the beam. It doesn't even explain why Joker decided to take the Normandy through the relay.
I just thought that there were a million ways it could be improved, and I hope that it will be addressed in either DLC or a patch. Thank you.
So....the endings.
