I was wondering....
What if about 50% of the community decided they like the nexus better than the vault and just starts using that, and the IGN sees traffic drop by 50% at the vault and decides to shut the vault down. What a interesting bit of irony that would be since the whole nexus idea sprung from the fear that the vault would shut down.
Note: I don't think this will happen since the vault will always have things that the nexus won't because many of the authors of this material aren't around anymore to move it over.
Irony...

It would have been worse than ironic if the Vault had shut down before we had an alternative. Personally, I plan to download everything I want from the Vault (that isn't on The Nexus) as rapidly as my limited monthly bandwidth allows and bid it a fond, if bittersweet, farewell. I remember it from it's heyday, when I spend many happy hours there reading threads and reviews, posting comments, voting and downloading.
I have nothing but respect for the volunteers who have maintained the Vault over the years, but the situation there is only going to get worse.

I'd say you should focus on the positive and not the negative, the vault is not going anywhere as it's just plain huge, and we have 2 places where to get files - the second of which actually offers the community completely new options, and since we have a real alternative they might actually be able to focus on improving things.
Often people focus so much on "what if's" and forget that what happens in life is usually what we never considered which are hard enough to deal with. And if the vault goes away it's really self inflicted due to our community no longer supporting them.
What we need to remember to do, is to keep supporting both the vault and the new nexus site as authors, it might be a bit more work, but it doubles your audience as well.

The old Bioware forums were "just plain huge" too, and disappeared essentially overnight with no opportunity to retrieve their contents. I fully expect The Vault to do the same and don't plan to be caught with my tail in a cleft stick.
The Vault has been in decline for over a year now, despite being supported by the NWN community because it was all there was. It's decline is not from lack of community support, but rather IGN support.
My point of view is different, perhaps, because I'm player rather than an author. I don't disagree with your sentiments, but as a player I intend to divorce myself from any dependence on The Vault as quickly as possible. For the sake of new players, I hope you are right about The Vault's future, since much of that content will never be brought over.

The threads over in the nwn1 forums seem to have gotten some people from that side interested in posting content over at the Nexus.
As Pain said, I plan on posting my content to both sites.

why do you think it would be closing any time soon?

As a modder, I support both sites. The more eyes to see my work. I know that the opening of the Nexus in fact resulted in the faster release of at least two new mods on the Vault -- ones that I would have released eventually, but I was in no hurry.
As an archivist, I'm downloading everything I can from the Vault, as a backup against a possible future. I have no particular reason to think it'll be going away, except that I've seen the sudden death of many behemoths. At least on this side, the Vault will not be seeing any dropoff in download numbers any time soon.
