A prequel will not work (also noone actually likes prequels except for writers). the Mass Effect universe was too young, you would be far too boxed in by lore. You would lose all the ability to tell any big picture stories. Star Wars avoided this by having the universe basically going around in circles as well, but their cycles keep the basic shape of the universe (races, jedis, sith, lightsabers) intact. In the Mass Effect universe a different extinction cycle is obviously not an option.
A sequel would not work, because the universe became boring at the end ... and some far future where they invented some different form of fast FTL travel would have almost no connection to the mass effect universe as we know it.
They can tie up a couple of lose ends at the end, and maybe have some "ground level" prequel stories ... effectively though Mac Walters killed the universe from a business point of view AFAICS. There are no more grand stories to be told in it (which is ultimately why he did it of course, writers are not really normal people ... and should be kept on a tight leash by more grounded individuals in these kinds of endeavours).
Really if Bioware wants to save Mass Effect as a franchise I don't think they have an alternative except for providing us an alternative ending.
