How am I not getting the "best" ending?

Ok, from what I understand in the Collector's Edition guide, and the internet, to get the ending where Shepard "lives," I have to meet two requirements:

1a. Have an EMS score of 4,000+ if I can convince the Illusive Man to kill himself and "save" Anderson (even though you don't really "save" him...), or...
1b. Have an EMS score of 5,000+, regardless of what happens to the Illusive Man or Anderson.

2. Pick the right-side, red-colored option at the Final Decision (the "Destroy" ending)

(I also destroyed the Collector Base, if that means anything).

... I just watched the ending for a second time and I STILL didn't get that little cutscene where Shepard is alive.  Instead I got that little scene with the old man talking to that little boy. Is the "Shepard alive" cutscene supposed to happen after that?

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.  I have the PS3 version, I imported my Shepard from ME2 that used Genesis to choose the ME1 decisions, I destroyed the Collector Base, I have an EMS score of 5,000+ and chose the Destroy ending. I don't know why I didn't get it.

I just want this clarified...

1. Do you have to get your EMS score to the level you want it before the "point of no return" to the Illusive Man's base? Because I actually only had an EMS score of 3,487 before that point (I didn't play multiplayer).  I ONLY brought up the score right before the mission on Earth to 5,000+ by playing multiplayer.

I even double checked my score after the game ends and the game auto-reloads you before the point of no return mission... My EMS is 5091 (Total Military Strength was 6974 with a 73% readiness rating at the time of this post).

2. Is there anything else I'm missing?? I don't get it.

I don't know why it's not working for you...
I had 5000+ (75% readiness), shot TIM by myself, chose "destroy" and got the little breathing-cutscene right after the crash-site of the Normandy.

Did you have your EMS score at that level before you went to the Illusive Man? I have a feeling I'm not getting it because there might be a certain cutoff point where the game takes into account what EMS score you have, and records it as THE EMS score it uses to determine the ending you get... I dunno.

I thought BW said we wouldn't have to play multiplayer for the best ending. Yet another disappointment.

Does the guide call this the "best" ending, because it's not in my opinion, even though they all suck. The best ending, for me is the synthesis, because Joker is smiling in that, which means the galaxy might be a happier place, no more conflict between synthetics and organics.

lol I just proved that even if you do play Multiplayer, you don't get the best ending. :-/

You can supposedly get the best ending without multiplayer, it's just significantly more time consuming to get at least 4,000+ EMS (or 8,000+ total military strength). I only managed to get 6794 before the readiness rating deduction and I thought I did everything I could. :[

It's really really asinine and never explicitly mentioned in the freaking game but the collector base factors into the ending...SOMEHOW. Which jumbles up the endings (barely) so that if you don't 'save' Anderson...or if you do...it may or may not **** up.

So if I choose to "not" save Anderson, I might get the "Shepard is alive!" ending?

What the hell, I can't bring myself to do that. :'[

I did every possible quest and only got 3400 so I really doubt it's possible to get 4000. Unless saving the Krogan female added more? IDK.

Yeah, I brought together the Geth and the Quarians.

I didn't get the achievement / trophy for "bringing most of the war assets to the final battle," though.

I had some 6900 in the buttom one, with 100% readiness after playing quite a few games of multiplayer. So yeah, you can get it. But that was with me getting all assets from planets, doing every sidemission +++

It's a lie! There is only one ending in 3 Variations. BioWare lied to us, there is undeniable proof. We were promised 10+ endings that were going to be deeply interacting with the choices we made during all three games. It didn't happen.

Ok, I just replayed the last part again, but instead, I chose all the Renegade dialogue options (I shot TIM instead of persuading him into guilt to commit suicide). It didn't make a difference -- I still didn't get the "Shepard Alive" ending. >:[

I swear, the EMS score probably only matters until a certain point in the game, then the game locks you in that score, regardless of how much you increase it afterwards... or maybe the PS3 version must be bugged. *sigh*

With 100% readiness I could get it too but I don't want to play MP and BW said we wouldn't have to for the best ending. I checked again and I had 3700 EMS. I don't know how to get more.

Yes, I believe this is the case.

I reloaded the beam up save after maxing my EMS over 5000. still didnt get the shepard lives thing.

probably have to return to an earlier save before final mission.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's experiencing this! Thanks for confirming.

I believe the "cutoff" idea is also supported because before you go to the Illusive Man's base, you get a chance to talk to Hackett again about the status of the galaxy in terms of war assets and stuff... after that point you can't do that anymore...

I just MIGHT play Multiplayer to get 100% Readiness Rating, just to make absolutely sure that I get this ending, even though everyone's saying 100% doesn't affect anything as long as you get 4,000 and above. I'm just wondering if I should start from the auto-save after you beat the game, or go back to an even earlier save before I traveled to TIM's base in the first place.

I just found out that the Master and Commander achievement is only awarded before the Illusive Man's base. This probably confirms that this is the "lockout" for the EMS score during the game.

Since I haven't even unlocked that achievement, despite my score of 5,000+ EMS... is probably the most likely reason why I didn't get the "Shepard Alive" ending.

I'll try to unlock the achievement, and then try for the ending again, to see if this changes anything.
