I looked and I didn't see this answered yet to I figured I would ask.

Are you able to continue playing after the end of ME3 or do you have to start a new game+?

The reason I ask is because, while I have yet to finish my campaign, I am fully aware of the ending and that well, everything goes to hell, including you die and the normandy crashes (If this is possible to avoid, please let me know because as I said I have not beat the game yet and would very much like to avoid that if at all possible).

Not having an option to be able to play beyond the end of the game seems to be a step backward on Bioware's part as far as gameplay goes.

You can keep playing past the end. You will be back on the Normandy prior to launching the final no-turning-back missions with an additional save auto-created right before the final ending scenes so you can play through all the scenarios.
