How do you beat it? Do you paint it and run around until the attack destroys it? Or is there some other way?

You have to look at where the beam is going. If it's going straight for you, get out of the way fast. Once you evade and it's lasering something else to oblivion, you will likely have enough time to paint it.

That worked for me anyway.

And remember you can keep painting it while you roll away from the lazers trying to kill you.

I went far left or right then as the lazer started coming towards me Id roll in the opposite direction and then finish the firing sequence. Remember to keep the firing button depressed while you are rolling. The very last shot though is unavoidable. You have to stare down the Reaper and just shot him.

what you do is stay on one side of the area wait for it to start targeting you, run aprox 1/2 to 3/4 of the way across the area, his laser should be somewhere above you, start targeting (stop moving you paint faster standing still) you will "hit and stagger him" right before the his laser hits you, rinse and repeat 3 times, fourth time it will go slow motion just keep it painted.

Wait 'til it fires, dodge the beam while starting to paint it for the next orbital barrage. The shot will land before the Reaper can fire again.

Stand still while painting, it goes faster.

I honestly feel like this was one of the sloppiest sections of the game. The person who's marginally aware of game mechanics and the process behind making games was blaring during this entire section "THIS IS THE KIND OF THING VALVE WOULD NEVER DO AND WOULD HAVE LISTENED TO PLAYTESTERS ON!"

Suffice it to say - yes, it's frustrating, and thus poorly designed. But just stand still while painting, sprint while not painting to avoid the beam, and it should work fine. Also when you get to the final hit start painting immediately as soon as the reticule pops up or you won't be able to shoot it in time.

a tactic I used was once it's laser started going for me I went one way then rolled the other way once or twice that way I could stand still and the targeting laser would lock on faster, the last part took me awhile eventually I just went to the front edge of the cliff and went to the side of the reaper and just stood still painting, I really didn't enjoy this part of the game xD

This was the worst sequence in any Bioware game ever. Up until this point, I had only died once. I died and reloaded about 20 times getting through this POS sequence. Not fun.

From the time that the painting system beeps, there is no flippin' time to make a safe dash. It just takes toooo long to target.

Here's what you have to do...

1. When it begins firing the beam move in one direction right or left.
2. What happens is that the beam will continue in that direction.
3. Side step in the opposite direction, and you're set.

It's pretty simple and it's basically tricking the AI. I know I sat there and tried to over analyse it.

(On a side note though it would have been nice to have it save after each hit, because going threw a loud screen, then the small little sequence of seeing the reaper walk to you takes a little.

You've simply got to get your timing right, nothing hard about it really. I didn't die and the technique I used was to stand on the far side of the ledge and as soon as the Reaper started to fire, sprint to the other side and paint it. If you timed it wrong and the barrage wasn't ready, just sprint back to the side you started on.

Yes, standing still makes the targeting much faster.

Took some trial and error for me me, but now I can it easily.
Tips:
1. Stand still while targeting, I believe it goes slower if you move.
2. Just dodge to the right or left when the beam gets close and then immediately continue targeting.

The only way I could beat it was rolling continuously while shooting. It took forever because I kept stopping to try to do it based on what the beam was doing but that didn't help me. I literally just rolled left to right and back again with the painting system on the whole time.

After 30+ attempts and trying to find a pattern, I noticed if you start to one side and let the laser almost reach you, run and pause in the middle, and the laser will be above you. The laser can only move upwards, giving enough time to target the Reaper

I died about 4 times in this sequence before I got it right. I didn't realize until my last attempt that you paint faster standing still. Derp.

Pro-tip: On difficulty hard or above, the laser will follow you and moves much faster. The only way to avoid it is to roll a split second before it reaches you. Any sooner and it will follow you, any sooner, and well, same result: critical mission failure. Plus, since there's no save points in the middle, you have to string together approximately 20 perfect split second rolls.

After half an hour of dieing every thirty seconds, I gave up on my insanity run and kicked it down to casual. The game was a cakewalk after that. I did keep the save files to try and finish it sometime I'm feeling particularly sadomasochistic.

Yeah - this is a simple mechanic. Paint it - it gets a hit. Its a fairly simple rinse and repeat, but its all about 2 things.

You have to paint it when the covers are not over the beam. Simply put, the Reaper is weak only when he has his 'eye-beam' open. If the plates are over it - then you have no chance to hit it. The mechanic here, I belive, is that the Reaper lowers its shields in that local spot to fire once the cowling is out of the way. So - you have to paint it when you see the red eye, not when the Reaper is 'blinking'.

Secondly, and equally as important, is the dodging move. If the Beam is near you, the Reaper will steer it into you - and you will be as dead as fried chicken. So - this is a dance. The Reaper opens up to fire, and if the beam is far away, you paint. If its close, you dodge, and try again. After each successful landing of firepower from the Quarian Fleet, the Reaper gets closer. So, you get to dodge more, because the Reaper is closer.

Just stick with the idea of beam close - then dodge, and beam far then paint the eye - and you will succeed.

You dont have to target the "eye" in one go. You can target it for a second, dodge then repeat.
