Let me start off by saying, as my signature displays, I hope Bioware either fix the endings or have a fast one hidden up their sleeves. That perfectly clear? Okay, here goes....
I can somewhat sympathise with the endings. I know if you take them literally, there are some glaring potholes that are left behind, but If you stand back and look at it from Biowares point of view, of the modern day gaming industry as a whole and their place in it, they have truly taken a creative gamble here.
The plumber always defeats the King of Koopas and saves the princess from another castle; the fairy boy from the Forest always defeats the evil in the world and restores peace to the land; the Super soldier always slaughters his enemies in the most heroic, grandiose fashion possible; The Special Ops team always kills it's enemy in a slow motion QTE. In our industry, happy endings are the rule and not the exception.
If I were sitting in a conference room in Biowares Edmonten offices, trying to think of ways to break the mold; to strike out and set a standard that few others are brave enough to tread, especially in this day and age of multi million dollar dribbler satisfiers, A sad, unexpected ending is an idea that has seen the least creative exploration.
So to make that sort of effort, with just another bunch of bigwig, brainless Capitalists breathing down your neck day in, day out to deliver the next seminal event in gaming history, Credit has to be given. Bioware took a massive risk, but ultimately, if the theories thought up by members of this forum are not true, they have failed in their task.
Ambition should never take precedent over common sense, which seems to have taken place here. It wouldn't matter as much if the plotholes weren't so obvious and huge, worsened by a seemingly complete disregard for the relationships that Bioware have strived so hard for us to care about over the course of 5 years.
So here we sit, stewing in our own discontentment and anger, waiting for some form of hope to filter onto the internet. Have Bioware hedged their bets on an inexplicable void of originality? Or are they about to show us exactly why they're one of the more celebrated developers in this modern gaming age of mediocrity and dribble?
Personally, I can appreciate risk takers in such a world, and for that reason, I will wait.
With skepticism.
