I recently reinstalled Mass Effect on Steam, to replay it and get a fresh Shepard for sequels, but I simply can't enjoy the game as it is.
I used to get a lot of problems with ME, from crashing with General Protection Fault, complete system freeze, sound stutters and so on. That was fixed by updating all drivers, updating game to patch 1.02 and cleaning up registry.
But I still got annoying freezes that would make the entire game stop, flash desktop screen at me, then resume few seconds later. I can bear that every half an hour or so, but at times it happens every 2-5 seconds. So I get a freeze, 5 seconds for it to recover, and a freeze a heartbeat later.
I tried playing the game in windowed in case it would work better, but I found out the issue instead - I get the "Driver has stopped working" for my AMD GPU warning whenever a freeze happens. Obviously it sometimes happens, but in ME1 it makes the game unplayable. It doesn't happen with ME2 or ME3, I played entire ME3 with maybe 4 or 5 freezes, all of them caused by losing Origin connection and restarting after few seconds.
I have a Dual-Core E6300 @ 2.8 (not overclocked, just in case that was the problem), 4GB DDR3, ATI Radeon 5770 and Realtek HD Audio, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and everything up to date, system and drivers.
Looked already for answers on the Internet, found nothing conclusive and EA support was... worth nothing.

The game is three years old now. If the archives have nothing on it, the few of us here who still wander back in from time to time won't, either, I don't imagine.

Well, I'm considering dual booting XP tomorrow when I find a CD with the installer, I'm guessing it'll be faster and more reliable than using a dozen of "cures" that aren't certain anyway.

Windowed mode would make it even worse. Do you have Vsynch turned off? If not, turn that off and try it. Also, set it up so that ME1 always launches in compatibility mode if you haven't already.
I have the 5770 also, and have had really no problems with the latest drivers (I've been playing ME1 again recently too) except a few minor things here and there. Don't know how much memory your card has or what brand it is... but you still might want to recheck the driver directly from the ATI site and either reinstall it, or use an earlier stable driver. Newest drivers don't mean the best drivers for ME1. You also might want to set Catalyst CC so that it uses application settings wherever possible.
