Well some one has to do the power gaming...

If not you, then someone in your party!

Someone has to take out the mobs while your high cunning PC makes persuasion checks

I'm the opposite of a powergamer really. I usually try to make the "best" build on my first playthrough, and then I intentionally gimp myself on subsequent plays in order to keep the game fresh and challenging.

I usually "powergame" my way through a new game my first time through, after i get a grasp on the gameplay and atmosphere i turn to roleplay for my future playthroughs.

Yes, this is what I do too. I need to know what the game is about, how it plays, what I can do and what I can't do before I can begin to concentrate on roleplaying. So my first playthrough I often blast through, powergaming my way through to the end while I learn how the game works.

For example I powergamed my first time through NWN1. But my second time through I roleplayed a female who had grown up hearing tales about Aribeth and who developed a teenage infatuation with the idealized image of Aribeth that had been presented to her. She became a Paladin and  joined the Academy because of Aribeth. She even scrimped and saved to buy a ring that had once belonged to Aribeth. But as she moved through the chapters of the game she became disillusioned with her role model and began to become her own person. That was a fun character and I could not have roleplayed her without having first played the game at least once.

I'm making mental notes now during my first playthrough of DA:O about how I might like to play certain characters later on.  I like to find little 'pockets' within a story into which I can squeeze a character and so far it looks like Dragon Age is going to have a lot of those. :)

I'm a roleplayer.

I will gladly skip quests if they don't feel right for my character. I don't mind losing XP if that means sticking more closely to my character's concept. I also favour looks over efficiency as far as items are concerned. If the uber god item looks like crap I won't use it.

Roleplaying.

I don't use the best armor ... I use what i find the most appropriate for my character..hell i used a crappy cloth armor on my mage for the entire game because it's looked great(BTW you should put that chasind armor on leliana .. those boob are huge)

I don't either care with making the best group set up .. I'm not speedrunning through the game.
I'm not trying either to *force* everyone to give me their quest by always giving them the right gift and boosting their approbation the quickest way possible. You keep hearing other playing getting romance with other character after Lothering .. that just stupid.Do they even realize they miss a lot of dialogue option?

So no .. I'm not picking some dialogue option because i will get bad approbation.Sometime yes when i really care about a character or what he/she say make sense(everyone need advice)

I read most quest and don't skip the dialogue (The one that repeat itself yes though lol )
Like you said it's a RPG not a MMORPG.You're not at competition with anyone . You're not trying to keep with other people in level or gears.

You're not trying to prove da peen to other.Just like i play in easy mode most of the time but rarely use the pause option or control the other character. It's just save me potion.

But i respect the choice of other. It's like skipping some page of a book because there's no action .
Why play a roleplaying game if it's not for roleplaying? It's like purchasing a book for the picture and not the story.

Personaly i keep every gift and just give them when their approbation start to get lower .. I'm not powerleveling their friendship level.

Considering how much time I spend in the Gameplay section of this board, definitely Powergamer.  On a scale of -5 to +5, where negative is powergamer and positive is roleplayer, I'd rate myself about a -4.5.

Roleplayer definitely. I play for the story, the interaction with npcs and the excitement, it's not that important for me if my character is the most powerful guy in the world or not, though I obviously don't want him to die twice for every step he takes either.

I'm a little bit of both.

I would say that I favor roleplay though. I always put more emphasis on immersing myself in my character and persona, and always make choices that fit my character. I never really try to make my character the strongest possible, but I do try to pick spells and skills that will aid my character, and make me more powerful in combat.

Strict powergamer. I cba to roleplay for my life and never adhere to any alignment on my characters. Most often i pick the response i find most profitable via items,XP, or if its amusing, in that priority order. I also aim to kill every orange npc in the game if possible for the loot.

Roleplayer here, got to say I loved my first playthrough as human noble because I had a set idea of how my character reacts and how they would develop and events that transpired during the game changed her opinions on some things and it was kind of funky how other characters commented on the change.

Got to admit that I found my 2nd runthrough slipping a bit with some choices taken purely to 'see what its like' namely on a class view. Whilst it was fun to try it, I think a slight bit of the enjoyment got took away in the end.

3rd runthrough am on now, am playing a brutish cold killer dwarf commoner whom if she thinks she can get away with it will kill anyone at drop of a hat. Seen the 'Knife of doom' a fair few times already and I can't see her attitude being changed like the 1st one was because she comes from a different background and am really looking forward to seeing the options I can make using her chain of thought.

I'm more roleplayer than powergamer but I dont like making totally stupid choices so I spend some time studing game mechanics and tactics but I wont go so far in the powergaming that I study place of every decimal to get optimum DPS and optimum Tanking.

My roleplayer side enjoy good story and my powerplayer side enjoy tactical challenge.

My first playtrough I attempted to roleplay city elf rogue that disliked of authorities becouse of his backround but still was generally good and helpful person who wanted help those in need without rewards and be a selfless hero.

Now my second playtrough I roleplay Human Mage who is power hungry villain that only care rewards and himself so I do as much selfish choices as I can.

Count me roleplayer who like challege so i have a small powergamer inside me too.

I'd say a bit of both. I'm on my second run with the very same char as in the first because I love that role too much. The very powerful human noble warrior that can get a 250 dmg hit on an opponent! :P

Hey, it 's not my fault that I am completely fascinated by big swords and the game has an achievement for getting that hit. I am still trying! It would be a lot easier to get that as a Mage or Archer (which I also love to rp, after 5 years with my real sindarin speaking elven archer in NWN's role play/action PW based on LotR. Some DM's hated me because I did get a powerful built for an arcane archer but some also rewarded me for writting an epic bio for him for his 1,800 years interacting with the history of Middle Earth, in english of course, which is not my primary language).

I am also enjoying making movies in this run and I have tubed quite a few on party interaction and dialogues on the road, few different party setup for battles on a random scale and definitely rp'd party setups for some especific areas/missions.

I role play but my role that I play still has to win. I am going to try and find the best fit party and select the best powers and spells to use.

Roleplayer first and foremost.

But I do enjoy seeing my character grow in power, and I try to optimize my character within his role. Right now what is difficult for me is I am playing a DW Rogue and I feel leather should be the heaviest armor he can wear effectively. Unfortunately I like the protection of massive armor and the game allows me to wear it since my strenght is high enough, so my DW Rogue currently wears the blood dragon armor. The way I rationalize it is that this is NOT D&D and I am simply operating within the game world's parameters. Cop-out? Maybe.

I probably lean towards powergamer, due primarily to my like of playing a character from zero to hero. Obviously I won't use gear that looks rubbish or out of place no matter how powerful, and I'll only go with a character concept that makes sense to me,  but that's as far as RP goes. Some people get really into the background of their character but I've never been into that.

When I do RPG-type games, first playthrough is always a "Let's maximize immersion" and just follow where the story takes you but making mental notes for getting better stats / party members on the next run.

After a few plays then I like to do oddball builds like elven tanks, orc mages or whatever (racial penalty goes against chosen specialty, etc.) - P.S., too bad Ohgren can't do magic, I'd take him along as a grumpy healer...

First and foremost RP. Almost everything done in game is considered with my character's background and personality. From quests, interaction, to skills, gear, etc.

Are the powergamers really powergamers, or are they just roleplaying a character who cares only about growing into the most powerful rogue/mage/warrior in the world?

I never stick to a particular personality, which is why I was chaotic neutral in BG.

It depends upon the situation with my PC... sometimes he gives kids lollypops, and sometimes one comment can make him fly into a rage and kill everyone who has slighted him. It's really not hard for me to powergame and roleplay-- sometimes I'll kill people who cut off quest lines simply because they ****** me off.

I'm a bit of both I suppose, but I'm more roleplayer than powergamer. I always try to make my characters as strong as possible but I refuse to have them looking like clowns. I also do not let the approval-bullsh!t decide which choices my character should make. Even though I know how the story will play out, and even if I know which choices are the best, I'll always choose what feels right for my character. My kind-hearted mage, for example, could never side with Behlen, even if it is the best choice (story-wise).

Hm, guess I'm not much of a powergamer at all. Well, what do you know :)
