mass effect 3.
It is not simply the matter of them ruining an otherwise great game (or the
entire trilogy for some people) with a horrible "ending," it's not
simply them taking a character who is important to the story, already on the
disk and completely playable, and locking him out as paid day 1 DLC, it is the
mindset that these choices represent.
They wouldn't do these things if they didn’t think they could get away with it
/ make more money by doing them. And so far they have been correct; people
whined and complained about it, but they bought from ashes anyway. If we don't
make a stand here, it won't stop with mass effect. If we don't stand up and
tell ea/bioware -in some way they cannot help but acknowledge- that this is not
acceptable, this is how dragon age will end as well. An important character
torn out and neutered to provide day 1 DLC; multiple "endings" that don’t
really differ and ignore all of your prior choices, even more content that
would have been in the “actual” game removed and doled out piecemeal over
several months. After all, writing a good story with compelling characters that
takes into account even a small fraction of possible player choices is hard and
expensive; why do all of that work for just 60$ when you can sell a hollow
shell of the game for 60$ and then get approximately that much again for the
rest? Why spend the time and money to make good endings when people are just going to buy the game anyway?
This is what will happen if we don't stop it.
What can we do? I'm not entirely sure; they already have our money for ME3, and
we have thus far done nothing to convince them that we collectively have the
will to follow through on promises not to buy their next game(s). One thing is
certain: if we don't do something, it is only going to get worse.
