Having played through the entire Mass Effect saga, I felt bad for both Saren and The Illusive Man. Mind you, I played a completely paragon Shepherd throughout ME 1-3 so both characters committed suicide to prevent further indocrination.   Don't get me wrong, both characters are villains who did unforgivable deeds but having played through the endings I think both Saren and The Illusive Man had some noble goals.   What do you guys and gals think deserved more sympathy, The Illusve Man who believed that controlling the reapers would  prevent extiction and would further advance humanity or  Saren who believed that living in slavery was better than extinction?

I honestly can't answer. I have no sympathy for either of them. Saren's death scene blew my mind, but I can't mourn those two bastards. They took some of Shep's friends away from her.
No mercy.

True, they both did some terrible actions throughout the series. With killing our favorite characters and all.

Saren, definitely. I couldn't believe TIM because he killed so many people and did so many things that were just plain villainous.

From what I know about the two neither were saints, with or without indoctrination. Neither without indoctrination would have made the same decisions.

Neither was sympathetic.

They were jerks even before they were mind controlled.

Before reading his torture scene in Revelations I would have said Saren. But they both deserved to die.

Not particularly sympathetic to either of them because they were both just so damned blind from their own inflated egos.

Never liked neither, killed both without remorse.

I currently can't get over the fact that at the very end, after all was said and done.. Shepard became them.

They both were looking out for their species and were both slightly xenophobic. Both were responsible for losing a friend. But in the end they were trying to help in their own horrifying ways. So I feel a little sympathy for them. But only when I charm/intimidate them. They redeem themselves slightly. Otherwise £&@? em.

Yeah, I hate both of them. Though TIM's final line, if you shoot him, is very beautiful.

I sympathize with TIM. And frankly I would have done the exact same in his situation.

All things considered, I'd say Saren was more sympathetic, torture scene aside. I mean, he was an appeaser hoping to secure all organics (humans too MAYBE) safe passage through the Reaper hoarde. The Illusive Man though? I trusted him at first during the first few parts of Mass Effect 2. It was only after the Collector Ship and the Derelict Reaper that I began to have serious doubts about him. Like, I always got the feeling he was indoctrinated when he kept pleading for the Collector Base to be saved.

Lo and behold, with this game, I was proven right, especially with Sanctuary. So, I stand by my decision that Saren, though he had dubious intentions at first, acted out of desperation and fear rather than a need to dominate in the end. Plus, unlike Illusive Man, Saren actually thanks you for talking him out of it all.

They're almost the same guy when you think about it but my vote goes to TIM, he's more intimidating than Saren.

I'm with you, actually. I found them both to be sympathetic, and particularly in the case of the Illusive Man, admirable at times. I would say the Illusive Man as the more sympathetic of the two, though. His last line of "I tried, Shepard" was honestly haunting... I take a certain degree of solace in the fact that it was his effort, his Lazarus Project, that ultimately saves the galaxy (such as it is... at the moment, anyway).

Big fan of his, and I'd jump on board with the indoctrination theory if only because it leaves the possibility of him still being out there somewhere.

I loved Harbinger but he really only has one moment of fame in Mass Effect 3.  Though I think his voice is awesome in ME 2.  I personally think Harbinger and Sovereign had a thing going on, that is why Harbinger keeps stalking you in ME2, so he can avenge his lover's death.

I really liked the Illusive Man through both Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. I felt a bit sad when he started trembling on the voice and began questioning if he was really in charge or not. I liked him even more when he decided to end himself after realising that he was in fact indoctrinated.

Well seeing that's exactly what happens.
Only replace "almost" with "completely".

Saren, I didn't hesitate to shoot the Illusive Man. I actually felt sorry for Saren.

That's exactly why there is a 99.9% chance that future DLC will 'rectify' the endings. It's the only hope we have.
