To completely forego the ending, go back, and do a complete playthrough of all three titles just as I have been planning to do and have anticipated doing for years now. Then, just back out of the third game as soon as Anderson says "I'm proud of you, son." I want to do that, and form my own conclusions in my head, but damn it, it's just so difficult knowing what actually happens. Rather, if that indeed IS what happens and there won't be another possibly more uplifting/survival ending option to yet be revealed.
Trying really, really hard

Dude, it's an indoctrination sequence at the end, I was actually pretty depressed about that ending but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense; the hidden ending of shep waking up back on earth, how most of the end scenes are "similar" to other moments in sheps life (citadel like reaper base, slow mo shoot in head sequence ala saren, talking TIM (saren) into shooting himself).
Not to mention the foreshadowing, at the beginning of the game ashley/gayden is still distrustful of you and asks "would you even know if you were being controlled?"
Have hope my friend, the real question is if it's going to cost another $10 or not.

Heh, dude if it involves getting the sense of closure that was absent..Heck, maybe even an option for Shepard's survival and to reunite him with his squad..I'd pay for that.
