Thats the only way the ending makes any sense, who goes that far just to all of a sudden trust the leader of the reapers when he says "You can save the galaxy by jumping into that beam of energy and being disintegrated" who does that honestly unless their indoctrinated??? If it was any other character we would assume they were indoctrinated and forced to kill themselves because being disintegrated by energy does not in anyway shape or form have any effect on saving the world. If the energy is hot enough and powerful enough to disintegrate your tissues its going to disintegrate you not absorb you into it magically. I'm pretty sure the catalyst just killed shepard and the rest was just what the catalyst concluded it should do with the crucible connected and the buildup of how your actions (paragon/renegade) affected its decision process.
