Dear EA: Your DRM system won't let me play a game I paid $69 for. Thanks.

 Dear EA,

For the second time this weekend, I cannot play Mass Effect 3 because your DRM system cannot contact your overtaxed servers. As a loyal purchaser of all three Mass Effect games on PC (and all their associated DLC, including "From Ashes"), I feel deeply frustrated that you have designed a DRM system that prevents paying users from enjoying their game. You should be absolutely desperate to solve this problem

Best,

A loyal customer.

If you run Origin and set it to offline mode then the game does not attempt to contact servers. You only need Origin to be online to get updates, etc.

This also applies to Steam. If you don't want to contact servers or your internet connection is down or whatever then just run in offline mode.

Fezzik,

Thanks, but this does not work. Essentially, the game will not let me resume the single-player campaign because it cannot authorize the "From Ashes" DLC. I cannot understand why Bioware/EA require this DLC to be authorized every time I launch the game. Why not just the first time I play it? Errors below:

"The Mass Effect server is unavailable at this time. Please try again later.

Unable to authorize the listed DLC. Please log in to the Alliance Network with the account used to purchase the DLC. From Ashes."

That's a pretty sad situation since the DRM already failed to keep people from cracking it.

Thankfully I haven't had your problems with authorizing, but I did get totally screwed by the cloud save feature from hell.

I have the same problem. But whats funny, my brother (we are using the same account) can connect to the servers at home (so can I when I am home), but I cant connect to them from where I am now. I am so frustrated about this. I just spent hours figuring out how to fix a game I paid 60€ for. I have tried EVERYTHING and it still doesnt work. So I cant play single-player because of some stupid DLC authorization (even after authorizating it once and even playing the damn thing). Seriously EA?

Hmm... That's very odd because I have the ashes DLC installed and I have just done a test and had Origin in offline mode and my intermet turned off and could load and play the game with no problems.

How did you get the from ashes DLC ?

I got it by buying the 800 points needed on my credit card. Then, when I had purchesed it Origin downloaded and installed it.

In saying that I did not have a game in progress when I got the DLC - In fact I started for the 1st time with the DLC in place. Don't know if this makes a difference.

If you look on My Games->Your regestered game content (menu on this site, not Origin) does Ashes show up ?
It does for me and I get this if click on download/instructions
Instructions for From Ashes DLC Requisition

1) Login with the same account you used to redeem your code in Origin or with the account you used to access the BioWare Social Network website.
2) Allow the DLC to download and install.
3) Run Mass Effect 3.
4) Start a new game or load an existing one.
5) The From Ashes content will be available once you gain access to the Normandy after completing the game’s prologue.

Point 4 says load an existing game so you should be able to resume. Sorry can't be of more help.

Fezzik,

I bought it through the same Origin account I bought the main game with. I bought it before I started playing, so the DLC would have the maximum effect on the storyline, if possible. That said, From Ashes does NOT show up in my BSN registered game content. I will do as you suggest, but if this is the problem, this is EXTREMELY POOR execution of a DRM strategy, IMHO. I appreciate your help, though.

PS: It now appears From Ashes was stripped from the main game and packaged as release-day DLC to make an extra $10. This is very damaging to the Bioware brand, if true.

DRM of any kind is pretty much a wasted effort. It's implemented to appease the corporate snobs at EA, let's them feel like they have some kind of protection, but it's ultimately an illusion. Sadly this is how it usually ends up, we people who payed for the game end up suffering while the pirates pay nothing and suffer none of it. I'm not endorsing piracy at all, it's we paying customers that allow games like this to be made in the first place. But hopefully there will come a time when devs will realize that they keep paying customers by making it worth our while to buy rather than pirate and quit making us jump throw hoops to do so.

Can't even play the single player game, BECAUSE THE DRM SERVERS ARE DOWN??? This is a completely inept display of game design.

- PIRATES: Don't have this problem and can play the SP/DLCs to their hearts content.

- LEGITIMATE GAME OWNERS: (who even forked out extra for the DLC) Are unable to play the singleplayer game due to a poorly designed DRM.

Why you feel the need to slap the people, who actually buy your games, is beyond me.

I have a box version of Collectors edition, so I had DLC right from the start... Now I just wish I did not :-/ This is nuts! The game knows its a CE and I still need an authorization from the servers! Do you seriously think EA I would buy CE and then pirate the DLC (I dont think its even possible!)?

Services like Steam and Origin is why I buy my games at retail stores and not digitally. I like being able to install them on laptops and take them anywhere I want since often I cannot be near a wifi zone all the time. Not to mention that cellular internet (Clear, 4G cards) is painfully slow and unreliable.

Bioware even said that you don't need to do the multiplayer to get the 'complete ending' of the game (multiplayer just double's your military strength on the war room console), so why require a retail purchased game to run Origin EVERY TIME I start the game?

I know I had issues with the autoplay feature on the DVD (despite autoplay being enabled in Windows, the DVD failed to launch) and it instead decided to do some sort of hybrid install (downloaded it first but then installed from the DVD for disc 2), but that doesn't mean I should be forced to be online.

There is a thing now that lets you unlock the dlc without paying for it (because it is suppose to be in the base game). Anyways, I'm sure it would work for your problem as well.

Edit: I would never suggest this if you hadn't payed for the content already, but sense you have it then it shouldn't be a problem. Also I'm not entirely sure if it would work.

I got the retail (physical DVD)  version. There is nothing to "unlock" as the DLC is NOT in the game already. I had to download 570 Meg of DLC through Origin which then installed it.

Just repeating what I've read and seen from other sources.

Ok. Just had this exact same issue myself and it is easy to resolve. I had the "server is down and can't authenticate DLC" message.

Solution ?

Stop Origin, restart it and then start ME3 from Origin by clicking on play button.

I assume Origin got confused when I turned my internet off and it didm't realise I had restarted it without restarting Origin.

i tried all these methods that were mentioned all around the forums, i even uninstalled my VPN program (Hamachi) and it still didn't do crap toward my being able to play the DLC offline, I'm getting sick of this at least i know where to go to get rid of From Ashes

DRM is a complete BS - it penalizes the people who did pay for the game. So here is a solution for all - if you feel grateful to EA/BioWare for making the game - buy it ... then go and download the cracked version from torrent. That's what things like DRM make you do. And don't even get me started about the Origin - what a crap... And don't buy any game from Origin again - you know how it will end up. Falling sales will send the message.

I have the same problem. But even connected to EA servers, game can't authorize my DLC's, including "From Ashes" that was bundled in CE. But here how I solved it. It is absurd, I know - but there is no other options for me, at least. So, you... plug you internet cable out of you PC and fully isolate your computer from internet. Then launch the Origin in offline mode and start ME3. Another funny thing is that such method was used by "semi-pirates" who payed for game, downloaded resources of "From Ashes" without paying for it and... yes, it worked. You know, after this and all that thing that you guys wrote about in this topic I feel kinda deceived. But I suppose it's not Bioware we musr blame for this mockery.

It is sad really, that the only people hindered by all those copy protections are the ones who bought the product.
