I'm going to be talking about my mainly weapons based soldier who spams ammo powers and grenades while running around with fortification on all the time.  The only power with a cooldown I use is adrenaline rush for emergencies and I hardly ever have to use it, so weapon weight is not factored in.

I'm also not going by weapon stats for the most part, I'm going by how they actually handle and deal damage in the field.

Best mid to long range:  The Valkyrie outclasses the Mattock and by association, most likely the Vindicator does too.  The Mattock is still a valid choice, but there are plenty of heavy pistols you can use if you're just going for mid to long range headshots.  I used the Vindicator in 2 until I got the Revenant (weight didn't affect cooldowns in 2 so choosing between the two was purely accuracy vs. damage) and it's still a pretty good rifle in this game, especially with ammo powers since it's a three round burst with moderate damage and good accuracy.  People who claim it's accuracy is bad because of recoil are ridiculous and have never played a shooter in their life.  The only guns with bad stability are the Argus and Revenant, and even the Revenant is still pretty manageable, though a stability mod makes it better.
Mid to short range:  The Revenant was my favorite weapon in 2 and it's still just as lethal for the most part in 3.  Give it to a teammate like Garrus with a scope on it and they can provide some pretty accurate support fire.  I use it with stability and extended barrel myself.  I use this gun the most because I believe it to be the best mid-range weapon in the game and that's the distance you fight at the most.  At longer ranges, I can always switch to an upgraded Phalanx to do the same job the Valkyrie would do, or even a sniper.
Phaeston and Geth Pulse Rifle have super high rate of fire and their other stats are balanced so they work decently with exploding incendiary rounds, although not as powerful as a Revenant at mid range.  The Avenger is fine too but the people who say it's the best rifle in the game are crazy.

The Argus is just nonsense, and the Saber is outclassed by sniper rifles like the Valiant or Black Widow.

The Falcon and Particle Rifle can be useful but they're not really assault rifles.  Falcon is slow and has low ammo, and in my opinion, it's power and damage radius aren't enough to compensate for that.  They did fix the glitch on it so that's good, but I just don't enjoy ever using the weapon except on maybe the turian soldier or krogan sentinel in multiplayer.  The ONLY thing that makes the Particle Rifle valid is it's unlimited ammo and huge proc rate with exploding incendiary ammo.  I find I never run out of ammo with the revenant though and the higher damage and still super high proc rate outclass it.

Overall, here's my favorites

Longer ranges:  Valkyrie
Mid to short ranges:  still the Revenant
Best effectiveness to weight ratio:  still the Vindicator
Best squad rifle: Revenant (weight doesn't affect them and it allows them to stagger enemies, supress enemies, and they're still more than accurate enough with it.)

Just go into a battle with Kaidan and Garrus, or Kaidan and Javik and have everyone use the revenant.  You'll see.  Plus Garrus and James have the added bonus of ammo powers.

I'm playing as a soldier with multible playthroughs and I'm thinking of trying out,
1. Sabre w/ upgrades, for long/mid range
2. Arc pistol w/ upgrades is very well balanced for short/mid range
3. Geth shotgun w/ upgrades to take out the heavy hitters like brutes and banshees.

I'll try and post back with some results.

Saber is a good rifle if you can aim well and you understand that the accuracy is not good if you fire it at max rate of fire or on the move.

The sabre w/ capacity mod + accuracy mod + incendiary power = instant kill on most enemies.

I'm starting to fall in love with this gun.

I like to run AR Piercing and Extended Barrel.

Saber is an awesome rifle, I only have it leveled at 1 in multi-player but it's so effective already, the only other gone that surprised me was the N7 Crusader shotgun, had a couple of double kills with that weapon, kind of weird to aim, as I'm used to a shotgun firing a spread, this one seems to fire a slug.

I keep wanting to use the Argus on my soldier, but it's just so damn heavy and inaccurate. Bioware should seriously fix that thing.

It's almost like an inside joke that the Argus is in the game. It's horrid.

I'm loving my new weapon loadout. Sabre, geth shotgun, and arc pistol. I'm killing enemies left and right and I barely have to take cover anymore.
