Best Assault Rifle to upgrade?

It unlocks the remaining weapon/mod tiers, and is very valuble for an Insanity playthrough.

Phaeston\\Avenger\\Vindicator is ok, BUT you have to stay out of cover for too much time. Playing Insanity, you going to get shot to death if you try to kill anything stronger than a husk... Mattock is the best for "casters", because of its nature(semi-auto, high damage per shot). An adept with Mattock can pop-out, do damage and get back to cover without losing the barriers. I recommend damage and instability improvement mods. Anything heavier and you're losing your focus on the class.
Again, I'm talking about adepts on Insanity. The principle is probably the same for the Sentinels and Engineers.

It might be my style of play, but I've found that I don't seem to even notice things being on cooldown if its less than -16% penalty. Ever since I upgraded my guns, took some of the recharge rate skill ranks in my biotics and put on some cooldown gear, my powers always seem to be ready when I need them, despite my encumberance being over the edge.

For the mods, I use Magazine Upgrade, and the Extended Barrel for more damage =D
In my opinion the Valkyrie don't need the Stability Damper mod.
By the way i use a N7 Valkyrie X and a N7 Valiant X

It's so light (at level 5) that you'll have +200% cooldown, yet it's fun to use and does wicked damage to everything, especially with warp ammo.
I played as a sentinel, and once I got a few upgrades I found I could carry the vindicators with that asari shotgun, or the vindicator with a predator and a tempest.
Pretty fun combos.

For a Soldier, or any weapons-first build, the Valkyrie is a great choice. If you abuse adrenaline rush, marksman, or tactical cloak, then the Particle Rifle and Saber are probably the best damage dealing assault rifles you can get, but you need those powers to help with how those weapons fire, as you might get into trouble a lot without them.
The Mattock and Vindicator both have excellent balance. They are lightweight, have quick reload times, good enough ammo capacity, good accuracy, and deal solid damage.

The vindicator is ok with the stability upgrade as well. relatively low weight, so you can spam a lot of powers.

I second this notion. I pretty much went from Avenger -> Mattock -> Saber, don't have the n7/argus etc. Completed the game on hardcore and it was actually very easy (soldier). Rarely ever died at least.mycroft77 wrote...
M99 Saber is pretty ridiculous, but you get it late in the game.

For teammates go for Falcon since they don't run out of ammo, it's pure awesomeness of grenades shooting.

True, but upgraded to Level V with Stability mods IV or V and a Assault Rifle Scope...it hits hard. I kept wanting to use other rifles on my soldier playthrough, but the Argus was too much fun with ammo powers (and since cooldowns for a soldier don't really matter I could afford the weight).Brawne wrote...

Given that ME3's system only cares about what class a weapon is for aesthetic reasons, I really don't understand why they made this thing a sniper rifle.
But, then again, they made the Saber an assault rifle, so go figure.
