The only ARs I bothered to upgrade were the Mattock (for me), the Revenant (for squadmates), and the Phaeston (for Garrus).
Edit: Oh, and the particle rifle for Javik.

Been using the PR for squaddies and myself for a while. Then switched back to the Mattock 5 for myself.

One of the most bizarre things I've found about ME3 is why people still love the mattock. :P

Pulse Rifle (w. explosive incendiary)
Saber (w. a damage power like carnage or e.drain to fire between shots)
Vindicator (probably the best of your early game options).

Beyond the fact that its basically a carnifex with three times the weight? :P

I could understand it back in ME2 where it was about as balanced as a drunken ice skater, but in this? I just don't get why people still use it. If I wanted a lightweight battle rifle, I'd go for the Vindi.

But the Carnifex is ineffective against shields and barriers, while the Mattock works great against them, especially with disruptor ammo. Add that with the fact that it weighs less than the other heavy-hitting rifles (except the vindicator) and its the best rounded gun.

4. Particle Rifle Looks pretty cool and has ammo that regens. Nice with explosive incindinary rounds. I found this rifle works very well with Stasis. Stop the foe in their tracks and then charge up the green beam.

I love the squad of Javik and James using incenary ammo/particle rifles paired with my adept.  Personally I carry a lighter shotgun like the Katana/Disiple so I can get 200% without using armor to speed up power cooldown.

I'm entering the forums quickly to ask you all...

What's the best Assault Rifle to use? I heard something about this Falcon weapon but you get it near the end of the game.

I'm not there yet. I've been using the vindicator with incendiary rounds but... I'm curious. Are there other better assault rifles? I mean, jeez... the upgrade costs are ridiculous but... what would you recommend? The Valkyrie?

Falcon. Use the increased clip size and extended barrel mods and it will literally demolish everything in sight. Combine with ammo powers and damage bonuses like Adrenaline Rush for complete ownage.

I usually play as either Soldier or Sentinel. I've found the Geth Pulse rifle to be the best. Its the only weapon I carry with me on my insanity sentinel run, I've upgraded it to level V so I can spam powers.

Lvl V-X Phaeston with Incendiary ammo literally mows down enemies.
The Particle Rifle with Incendiary ammo is also amazing.
The Mattock is great, used it all the time in ME2.

The mattock has much better burst dps, efficiency and versatility. The paladin/carnifex are quite overrated IMO. Weight isn't really a big deal unless you plan on carrying more than two normal weapons, or want to carry one heavy weapon. As long as you're over 100% you should be fine. Even then a Mattock X and Carnifex X equipped at the same time is still 200% recharge.

The best ar to me would be the avenger. Versatile, with a good fire rate - finger control tight burst - it is also light weight and accurate.
The best ar to upgrade would be the valkyrie. At level one it's surprisingly inaccurate for a 2/3 round burst weapon - as the whole point in reducing the fire rate is to better manage recoil among other things. At level 10 with only 5 level upgrades, it feels like an entire different weapon as even the smallest upgrade makes a noticeable difference in shot grouping and kickback.

man, there are so many Assault rifles in this game but these are the best to upgrade

the phaeston is great for anyone in a support role like the sentinel. the gun is almost as powerful as the revenant but much lighter. use extended mags  and what ever you prefer as the second attachment

the mattock and any of the burst rifles are good for anyone who uses an smg like the tempest or hurricane so you have a great cqb weapon and a good long range one too.

the avenger the most versitile weapon, being a jack of all trades weapon. i normally use the avenger for my soldier class with a shotgun so i have both firepower and fast power recharge for more slow-mo time

Most of the AR's in the game just suck. I find myself using the same recycled ones from ME2. Mainly the Vindicator. I hate the single shot button pusher guns like the Mattock.

Avenger or Vindicator. If you have one, the Saber is excellent for precision players.

so which one: phaeston or particle rifle? And not for me, for the squad, particularly either javik, liara or Garrus....

I would give your squad mates the Particle Rifle. Accuracy doesn't affect them and... well... the particle rifle is one giant accurate beam. Give it to them baby, uh huh uh huh.

Particle Rifle. The Phaeston is more for the player than squadmates. Given its similarities to the Revenant and the fact that weight nor accuracy matters for squadmates, even that (among others) would be a superior choice for them over the Phaeston.

Geth Pulse Rifle.

It's a damn machine gun with almost no recoil.

OK, it doesn't do lot of damage like other weapons, but it's a good trade off if you don't like to shift fire or just forgot often for that and you panic a lot.

Particle Rifle is plain old broken when paired with ammo powers and because of how it works and ME3's ammo system your squad will use that extended magazine mod for larger, more frequent fully charged PR beams.

Fully charged PR beams eat insane difficulty for breakfast so ya, PR for everyone you can justify putting it on.

I confirm, GPR with maxed Inferno Ammo on soldier eats enemies.
