The problem with this notion is 1) Not everyone has finished the game yet, and 2) No one really has any good hard and fast facts about how people are feeling about this game. You "doubt" that the ending dissenters constitute 1%, but you don't really know, which would be fine, until you confidently state that ending dissenters are "very much" a vocal minority.

Eh, whatever generates hits I guess. Kotaku was reporting on anime android sex robots being built in Japan too.

I actually frequent Kotaku. I'm not sure how I feel about this piece though. I know it's JUST A GAME, but if this guy was as emotionally invested as we were, he wouldn't have this up.

"What right does someone have to demand changes to the end of a story they did not write—and as this would, assuredly, be released as downloadable content—expect all of that labor for free? Because they'll refuse to endorse a product they've already bought?"

Excuse me?
A.) I don't know who this guy is, but I'm MORE than certain people would pay for the DLC...unfortunately. But still. Hell, they hired my favorite VA to be in this game. Where do I sign to give up a few months paychecks to hear him once again?

B.) Oh, I'm sorry. I KNOW there has to be one game you felt beyond dissapointed in. I'm not saying I felt dissapointed as I am working on my 2nd play through able to tough it out for the ending. But people have emotions. Hell, sometimes I wish I could waltz right up to Blizzard and slap a couple of devs for things in WoW that irk me. Right now, all I would ever want is an explanation to the ending. Really.

This guy or girl or whatever, I feel they haven't played it from 1. Every little detail that fans can remember. You work hard, you invest time into it...ONLY to get left with the biggest "Wtf" look on your face. I'm done.

20,000 is a  high enough number to create an accurate poll with.

That is impossible to know because we can't poll the entire Mass Effect 3 community accurately & scientifically. It is impossible to prove or disprove that the fan base is either A) Majority upset w/the endings or B)the majority enjoy the endings or C) a majority don't feel strongly either way.

What we see on all sides is the vocal minority towards the strongly positive & the strongly negative we do not (& because the purchasing records are private can never find out) & cannot find out what the actual majority of gamers feel on the issue. It's not like politics where you can poll segments of the population & find a scientifically reasonable answer (Or any of the other myriad of issues you can poll easily).

In chastising the gaming community the Kotaku writer makes a logical fallacy himself by labeling the outraged as a minority. There is no way of confirming or denying that & in a logical, reasoned argument any claim that can not by any means available be proven true or false is fallacious

(In logic and rhetoric, a fallacy is usually an improper argumentation in reasoning resulting in a misconception or presumption. For those who do not know what the word means.)

(The 20,000 poll while interesting is not scientifically valid because it is only polling those who choose to speak out, not randomly sampling all Mass Effect 3 owners who have completed the game & discovering their opinions on the ending)

It's funny how idiots like this seem to think what they write are actually insightful. Another low paid writer trying to say the consumer doesn't have a right to say what they are saying

Totally besides the point... not surprising.

I don't think most people here are the typical haters... hell, I am 34 years old, have a job and a family... I could care less about a flawed entertainment product (and most of them are). I actually never hated or complaned about a game before becaus I never found it worth the affort...

But this one time, I choose to care. Why? Because this one time, a company really made me CARE for their product! They did a wonderful job, I haven't seen a story this well executed since Planescape Torment... except the totally out of place, axed and butchered little ending that was tucked on as a last minute solution.

Apparently we are all Kathy Bates for actually wanting an ending that makes some kind of sense.

Honestly do not see why asking and petitioning is a problem. We have not threatened physical violence or any harassment in any way. We have been asking, and saying we will not buy any DLC unless the endings are chacged.

The changed fallout 3's ending, and they are fixing the witcher 2's ending. I do not think it is too much to ask whent he majority of your fan base is not happy. The endings really are that bad. I find it strange that major gaming sites are saying the fan base is being stupid, while minor ones that do not get support from EA are saying the fans have a right to be mad.

They changed the Witcher 2 ending? I thought it was soild enough. It made at least sense in context.

To clarify, I wasn't implying people who like the endings are stupid. If you are fine with the endings, that's great.

But you can't deny that there are people coming up with more questions than answers. It isn't the fault of the viewer if bioware has left some very massive things unexplained.

And I say this as someone who will happily state that ME3, up until the endings, is one of my favorite games ever. That's why its worth salvaging.

IMO those fine with the ending while not stupid, just dont care about the plot device not making sense.

I hate to say it, but this is pretty much the tone we're going to get from now until the near future.

Gaming press is going to side with the folks who give them access to information so they can write articles about games before they come out.  And don't be surprised if this is what we're going to get from BioWare when they finally get finished drafting their official statement.

You could write a million posts on these boards, start up a hundred online petitions, and absolutely nothing is going to come out of it.

But when your money isn't ending up in the pockets of the folks who came up with this lazy, inept ending, that's when people notice.  So remember that when the first big announcement of ME3 DLC comes out.

I can't take kotaku seriously since one someone linked me to a blog (now removed) where one of their authors goes on this racist rampage against a black person who touched him. He says something like, "This is America! You can't touch me! In glorious Japan they know better manners and respect." Then he goes into this spiel about how he used judo that he learned in Japan on the black guy.

Needless to say, this anime/Japan worshipping dude is white.

Ok, you got me. Your ruse has tricked me into stating the obvious. I hope you are happy!

No conscientious person would have found themselves on Kotaku to begin with. That site is complete rubbish. I cannot, nor can 99 of 100 gamers, name anyone who writes for that site. They do not even seem to be gamers, let alone journalists.

And they where right... numerous reviews stated this aswell.

Personally, I think this is a good trend. It has become a sad practice in gaming industry to rush projects out (because of publisher demands or to reach certain target sale periods) to fast and/or incomplete, only to be later fixed with patches and DLC. The Witcher 2's ending was a pretty obvious example for that... and the producers even have admitted this by now.

Personally I think this trend should be countered, and if customer demands can change something about that, I feel fine with that...

I'd have to say I agree with the article entirely. Bioware and its intellectual properties are not a democracy. Mass Effect 3 was very fan-informed as it was. If you counted the number of in-jokes, self-references, and player ideas adapted virtually verbatim from these forums and the previous ME forums. This doesn't mean the fans have any creative control, and they shouldn't expect that they do.

Sure, make a petition, but don't expect Bioware to do anything about it, and it's petty to criticize their business practices just because they didn't do what a couple thousand people want. Millions of people bought the game. Maybe when a million or so people sign a petition, Bioware will take notice.

And then, even if Bioware did "fix" the ending with DLC, the article is quite astute in making the judgement that most petition signers would expect it to be free. Because, obviously, something that costs EA-Bioware lots money to make should be offered free of charge. That's reasonable.

And if Bioware does make the DLC and doesn't make it free, well suddenly they're greedy monsters nickle-and-diming the public.

As per the norm with the self-entitled frequenters of these fine forums, Bioware is damned if they do, and damned if they don't. Typical.

I was quite satisfied with the Green ending. Synthesis. EDI and Joker were all happy and hopeful, the geth survive, and every race in the universe evolved. Sounds like a win to me.

This kotaku guy must have pretty low standards at his job. The poll reflects opinion and emotion rather than a real world demand. no one is actually delusional enough to think bioware is going to hire back actors to fix the ending, but it will give bioware something to chew on next time they make a game. I know my feeling is I want bioware to change this, but I know that's not going to happen and I'm sure if I made a poll the wording would reflect my emotion rather than a real demand.

If anything good came out of this it's that these endings pretty much make the last crappy novel pointless in the ongoing history.

Well the thing is, I personally don't think it's right for fans to outrage about an artistic work and forcing the developers to revise it, In an economic sense it'll cost them a lot of money to achieve what everyone is proposing. But on the other hand, if gamers are willing to pay for the DLC of the original ending, then that would be a chance for EA/Bioware to earn extra money where both sides are happy and i'm sure Mass Effect will be remembered as the greatest series in gaming history but currently, Bioware stands at a loss from what I can see, the risk losing a large proportion of the revenue from the DLC they have planned because I don't think most of the fans who has completed the game would ever touch the series again, thats how much it has impacted them. Personally I am fine with the given ending, I don't mind the bittersweet but it would have been better if the intentions of the reapers were as the original script but the game has been truly stunning until then. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, because maybe Bioware may see the benefits of creating a DLC might outweigh the option of not.
