I'm definitely in support of the campaign to change the ending to something it *should* have been in the first place; while I respect that others disagree, it nice to see, more and more, that it really is the majority, not just a very vocal minority, that is standing firm in their resolve to see ME3 completed with everything that was promised as well as maintaining the tone of the entire series and the conclusions of the two previous entries.
The consistent excuse that "It's a War Story, so it shouldn't have a good ending," is really irrelevant and just flat out flawed. Mass Effect has always been a heroic action adventure and science fiction epic, it's never tried to be overly realistic in it's portrayal of the "realities" of War. Sacrifices and losses, of course. But an ending which forces a tragic narrative conclusion seemingly for the mere sake of somber pathos just flies in the face of everything the series has done to this point.
Anyway, that's neither here nor there; my initial intent was to simply say that while the ending featured on Page 1 certainly is of better quality and substance then what the writers chose to go with, it's still not what I want to see, at least in part. What I would have really loved is seeing not only the races, against all odds, Rally, defeat the Reapers and eliminate the threat once and for all, preserving everything remaining (not loosing half of the advanced technology, Relays included, in the Universe as a giant MacGuffin) and finally being free to decide their own fate as a whole, not cut off from one another. Also, of course, seeing Shepard come out the other end, much as we saw in the climax of ME1 after Sovereign's remains wreck the Citadel Tower.
What would have been an awesome Epilogue, allowing the players one last experience with choice in the narrative:
Cut to a year later, we see news footage of various worlds across the galaxy, including Earth, undergoing massive reconstruction efforts, with all the races aiding each other where they can in a strong effort to maintain the new bonds of peace and cooperation Shepard (we) forged among them.
You then hear a Voice Over, and it's either Diana Allers or Al-Jilani (if you finally called her on her BS once and for all and got her to open up to you) saying something along the lines of, "As recovery efforts continue across the galaxy, with Alliance races continuing to work hand in hand to rebuild anew after the devastation, we stop to reflect on what has been lost, and, most importantly, what has been gained.”
“How did this terrible war come to pass and how was it resolved. Greatest of all, what comes next? To answer that we turn to the architect of the Galaxy's resounding, and seemingly impossible, victory against the greatest threat intelligent life has ever known."
The Camera then pans and we see our Shepard, looking slightly older (the cost of his long fight evident on his/her face) sitting across from the interviewer. At this juncture, the Reporter would ask Shepard to sum up his/her motivation and determination in fighting the Reapers, about the revelations and warning of the future The Child tried to sway him too, if he believed it, what could be done to stop it, and so forth.
Also, depending on what characters lived or died the Reporter would comment on what has happened to them in the intervening year, namely Wrex's new progressive Krogan Government, Garrus being named the New Primarch, Liara T'Soni fading from public view, Ashley/Kaidan becoming prominent military figures/leaders, Tali and the Quarians working with the Geth to rebuild Rannoch as well as opening their reclaimed world to refugees displaced by the War (much as they were 500 years before) and so on.
The Reporter will also inquire as to what Shepard has been doing/will plan to do, and here the Player can make a call much as was given at the end of Dragon Age Origins. Help rebuild the new Alliance Government, perhaps even accept offers to lead the new Government, travel the Galaxy to search out new threats, or even settle down with their respective Love Interest.
When the Interview concludes the Interview we cut to Shepard standing at and observation port exactly like the one we first saw him/her looking out at the opening of ME1 (coming full circle) Beyond the viewport we see ships from every race, giving a sense that whatever comes the races will stand together. Shepard's lasting legacy. If Shepard's LI is still alive we here them speak off screen
"Ready to go?" They ask.
"Yes."
The LI then asks, "What do you think will happen. To all of this?" They ask.
"I wish I could say for sure. But, whatever happens, it will be our future to choose."
Then we cue up some Heroic music like was heard in the end credits to ME1 (or maybe some Two Steps From Hell, whatever's best) and we get one last shot of The Normandy flying off, the future, and the stars, open to a million possibilities.
That is an ending I would have liked to have seen. Maybe *too* happy for some, but that's what the previous games made we think we would get. So, fingers crossed something like that is on the near horizon.
This would be great, but i don't think they'd go for it... it's more than i would hope for...but it would be awesome;)
