So i finished ME3 with my Infiltrator on the weekend, and just for lulz i created a ''blank slate'' adept with zero import.
On the exact same difficulty as my primary character but holy crap it is difficult staying alive.
The temptation to totally forgo all biotics and just go back to weapons only is pretty intense. My biotics dont do squat and the cooldown is brutal.
Any tips on simply how to survive as an adept? I am using very low weight weapons to try and keep my biotic cooldowns to a minimum but still, its just difficult both killing AND not being killed. A few shots at me whilst i peek around the corner to toss a biotic power and my ''barrier shield thingy'' is half gone. I even spread my points between only my primary attacks and my defensive talents.
I never had this much trouble on my Infiltrator. I have Reave for a bonus power for an additional attack and defensive ability. Should i perhaps choose Barrier as my bonus power?

I played my first game on Insanity with an Adept. Once you level up a bit the cooldowns are practically nonexistent. Every biotic power can detonate ever other. In my game, enemies are flying all over the map. I use my AR just for variety here and there, expecially once it's leveled up a bit too. But I could take care of most enemies with just Biotics, especially if you bring another Biotic along.

How are you having trouble?
Zero import is going to be harder to start with, but how do you have long cooldowns? As an Adept, by the time Pull/Singularity hits the enemy, you can fire out a throw/warp. This creates a biotic explosion that will one hit kill any enemy that has just health. If the have shields/armour/barrier, then hit them with Warp first, then with Throw, this will create another Biotic explosion that will strip their defences.
Only take a pistol so that you have 200% reduction. Liara can help set up biotic combos with her Singularity/Warp/Stasis. Invest in shield with fitness, and concentrate on power damage/reduced recharges.
Lastly, what difficulty are you even playing on? I'm playing on insanity and have encountered no problems playing as an Adept.

Yep. I carry an AR & a Heavy Pistol, and still have no issues with cooldown.

If I'm not mistaken, the lower the difficulty you play on, the longer the base cool down for warp. As in, it's not even 2 seconds on insanity, but for some reason it's like 15 seconds on easy. I think the idea is that warp combos can be quite powerful and thus they are restricted on easy less they be absurdly overpowered. On Insanity, however, frequent uses of various biotic combos are the essential play style.
I may be wrong. It may have been a bug that my warp was on a 15 seconds cooldown when I tried "story mode."
Aside from that, if you have trouble staying alive with an adept, it may also be important to understand the play style is very very unique. You won't use your gun that much (though there are times where it's useful). Singularity and Pull can help you keep an entire battlefield flying through the air. And most importantly, if something closes on you, you need to get away. Adepts just can't take a lot of direct fire. However, their abilities make damage on the move much much easier.
Remember your team composition is important too. You really want someone with overload to take out shields, exposing normally powerful units to instant kills with the ever popular overload - pull - warp combo.
Finally, make sure your equipment is appropriate. Huge health bonuses won't help you nearly as much as gear that increases your power damage, power cooldown, and barrier strength. Weapon bonuses are too situational, and melee bonuses are unneeded, as adept melee strikes can actually create a biotic explosion if the target is lifted, and power damage is more important there.
