Yeah, I didn't speak to her much in my first playthrough...which was of a mage....but my second time...I clicked on her accidently in the werewolf lair, and she said "How did you come to be a grey warden?"
I replied "Arl Howe murdered my family, and Duncan helped me escape." I thought it would end right there...because even with my romance with Alistair, the only time he asked me ANYTHING about my background was when he asked "Have you ever lost someone close to you?" to which I replied "Yeah, my whole family was murdered recently" Then he just goes "Ohhhh...right...sorry, I forgot." And that was it. Wow, we are in a relationship and thats all I got?
But Wynne continued...asked me why Arl Howe would do that, asked who I was infact...I actually had a WHOLE conversation with Wynne...not just a Q&A, and it was about ME!

I SO agree with everything you said here. I adored Wynne. She's both extremely useful if you're playing a fighter or rogue and extremely nice--the ONLY one of the companions who really gives a crap about you and your origin, the main feature of the game. Conversations with her added a lot to the game in terms of defining the PC, making you feel like you know who your character is. I too accidentally clicked on her during the Warden's Quest and was shocked to hear her asking those same questions about why I became a Grey Warden. It really affected me.

I too felt a bit pissed at Alistair for not really knowing or caring who my character was beyond mushy infatuation. I mean, I loved him like crazy, I really did, for all that he is... but the fact that he didn't return the favor even a little bit beyond being a fellow Grey Warden was rather depressing. Your origin didn't affect your relationship with him, like, at all. That disappointed me.

I don't care that it fits his personality to back off when he realizes he's treading into tricky territory. It didn't fit mine. I wanted to be able to say something. I mean, even Morrigan had a line about how our mothers sucked and we had more in common than she thought when I went back home, but Alistair... nothing. Absolutely nothing. I really needed to talk about it and he wouldn't let me. That was frustrating and I wished that a PC could get some more love in that department.

And hugging Wynne and Fergus would definitely be great. I mean, after all you've been through... hugging would just be insanely necessary. That would've helped a lot to feel human. As great as the game is in so many ways, that would've added a lot, if that lovely vein of kissing could be extended to hugging. I hope it's modded in.

Also: Wynne + Zevran = HILARITY. Same goes for her with Oghren and Alistair. Al tries to get on her good side by being adorable, she and Oghren discuss alcohol, and she constantly tries to redeem Zevran only to be deflected by his persistent outrageous flirtations. Her grim, weary tone of voice only adds to the laughs. Awesomeness.

I like Wynne's philosophy in camp. I thought she would be boring to talk to at first, but then she had some amazing quotes.

Care to quote some of her wonderful philosophical quotes?

My first play through I avoided the mage tower because I didn't think I wanted or needed her. Wow did I ever make a mistake. I reloaded my rogue to a very early save to get her and have her most of the game.

I was also annoyed that Alistair and Leliana did care about what my PC had been through. Especially since they expected me to help them grow up. -_-

Don't get me wrong, I love Alistair...but I just find with each playthrough, that my patience for him becomes less and less. I have to do so much crap just to keep him...and sometimes I am not sure if it is worth it. I mean, he is great, and he is sweet...but the more I play, the more I feel that he is a little more deceptive then you initially think. He tells you that you are his first, and he wants you to be his last...but he has no problem throwin you aside if you make him king, but dont want to harden him...okay, sorry about that. I just finished playing a few minutes ago...and I was even more irritated with him then usual. It was the first time I picked "so if Arl Eamon is not your father, then you must know who your father is" to which he outrightly lied "uhhh my father died even before my mother"...which he never apologizes for. Okay...now I am done lol. Damn, I wish I could romance Sten.

What a relief it was to find her as I first played through on nightmare mode (yes her healing did keep me alive Lord Phoebus). I'll go to the Circle Tower first on every consequent playthrough!

But did her healing keep you alive better than a glyph of paralyzation (or repulsion centered on the wounded character), sleep, paralyze, etc. would? You don't need to heal if your enemies can't deal any damage.  My problem with Wynne's spells is that she has no CC other than the laughable Earthquake and no damage spells other than mana bolt and stone fist.  She doesn't even have any hexes to help you kill faster.  It takes about 8 to 10 levels from when you get her to get her either some effective CC or effective damage spells.  Even if you do use her to heal, do you get benefit from much more than heal and group heal, which are the first two spells in their branches?  And was that healing better than a healing poultice which is cheaper to craft than a lyrium potion?

Just saying, there are better ways to use mana than chain casting heal.  Feel free to disagree, after all my way isn't the only way to play the game.

I find Wynne incredibly useful. But I guess with mages, a lot depends on the level you get them versus what you want to use them for. She was level 8 when I picked her up, and after giving her Mass Rejuvenation at 9 I went down the Mind Blast line which is just crazily good. After that, the frost line. Now I'm sitting on several unspent points trying to decide what to go for next. I don't need her as a damage dealer. I don't need debuffs. I don't need Mana Clash. I rarely if every need more CC than Force Field or Crushing Prison, and I actually used those less and less as my party got higher in level because CC feels pretty cheap and takes the fun out of combat if overused. She's perfect as a healer and can be built to whatever secondary role you want when you get her early. For me, healing and some dabbling in CC and damage is all I need since I prefer to focus on my main (sword & board Templar/Champion for the first playthrough) and the rest of the NPCs are mainly there as support, though I do have tactics off and enjoy micromanaging everything.

(Odd that I'm a bit anti-CC here since one of my big gameplay gripes with WoW is how useless CC has become there. Heh. But it just "feels" different in a singleplayer game.)

We all went through the Origins, and if it did its job properly, it certainly pulled at the heart strings a bit. Right from the beginning, you end up feeling for your PC and become angry for them for what they have gone through. Then you get thrown head first into this huge fight of your life...and everyone just wants wants wants. All your companions bring their problems to you, all these other people in the story want you to fix everything. But no one, cares to know anything about you, what your PC as gone through, or that maybe...you just need to talk.

Except for Wynne.

Wynne became my go to person for comfort and support. She asks you how you are feeling, gives you advice and comfort. And just smiles and laughs when you disagree with her because "she was young once too". She asks your PC about your background and gives you sympathy for what you have been through....Grey Warden aside.

When I got her personal quest, I dropped everything to find that elf for her. When she told me she was sick...I cried, and she was the first person I wanted to talk to after fighting the archdemon.

Wynne made the whole game feel just that much more real to me....because she was the one that I could count on to give advice and support when it was no where else to be found. Just like in real life you have that one friend that you can always go to.

I used to love it after a win when she would say, 'oh, that went really well...', as if she was totally surprised we hadn't been wiped Image IPB.

An awesome character in more ways than one.

Yes she could heal me through those times, but I also had Morrigan with just that 1 heal spell to help keep me alive.  I'm sure I played a drawn out game because my sword and board warrior has over 1/2 of the party damage even with having Morrigan in the party.

I'm going to play through the game focusing on damage and no healers on one of my playthroughs though.
