Can anyone clarify once and for all, as i have been reading a few sites that say if you build up your EMS it can lead to a better ending or is this just giving us all false hope ?.

All it leads to is a tiny scene where it is suggested that Shepard is alive. This is with enough EMS and a Destroy ending.
