(and yes I have searched it...even googled what I'm asking!)
So after finally kicking some ass in Object Rho with my Widow Infiltrator (I actually skipped using Stasis too, Geth Shield Boost is so awesome) I'm installing my collectors edition for ME3 as I type but I've been going over some numbers and I felt I found something that's, to put it mildly, making me regret going as an infiltrator.
Let me be clear that I'm a long range fighter at heart. Most of my engagments I take care off with a well placed Widow shot to the head and very rarely will I set foot into a medium range, and even more so for close quarters.
My power usage was something that made me notice it first. I really only used two (three if you count ammo) powers. Cloak, shield boost and disrupter. Mid-Late game in ME2, I was more or less one shotting with my widow (on insanity, who doesn't play on insanity nowadays?) and two to three shots with targets that had armour, the only time I used Incinerate.
continuing from my last point, I noted was my use of cloak. I didn't really use it all that often. Generally I used it for that boost for my sniper and on a rare occason to buy myself some time to line up a shot and even rarer to escape a dodgy situation. It made me look back at the soldier class for a moment and it's signiture class power Adrenaline Rush. I know that the soldier was more or less run and gun with ammo powers along with conussion shot (not sure what's new in ME3, will check out on a dummy playthrough) but some numbers that I've looked on suggested that using AR was more effective than the Infiltrator's cloak damage.
Maybe I''m looking for someone to kick me in the right direction, maybe I just need to type this up, re-read it and make a decision (I've always been like this)
The reason I went with the infiltrator was the rougelikeness it had. Playing SWTOR I'd go for the Imperial Sniper because I like it more than it's republic counter part. Playing Dragon Age Origins, I'd play as an archer (as soon as I find the hotfix to make it viable)
I'm a precision guy, it's what I prefer lately. That feeling when you get an awesome shot is just...*shudders*
As I said I'd like to get some opinions on this. Maybe its just an issue I'm having with just wanting to pop heads at range...I mean who doesn;t? :3

I don't know what you are looking for exactly, but I can certainly make some comments about soldier and infiltrator in ME2 and Soldier in ME3 SP.
I while back I made the somewhat unpopular thread "Infiltrator is the Worst class"... What I was really trying to express was just a few things about effectiveness and more to the point how it is somewhat overrated in ME2. The classes are balanced fairly well in all honesty, but Cloak is a bit overrated and much of that has to do with its relation to other powers and more importantly limitations in the AI in ME2.
So if you found you weren't using cloak all that much then I wouldn't fault you for it. You shouldn't be wasting cooldowns on it. The only place where it truely shines is on Object Rho. Otherwise its effectiveness is limited. Rest assured someone will come in here and talk about flanking and positioning, but in reality there is limited utility to flanking in ME2 mostly due to level design, and again due to the enemy AI.
Now if you aren't using Cloak then what should you be using? Incinerate is one of the best powers in the game. And if you power reload with it then you can deal a lot of damage in combination with the Mantis or Widow. Alternatively, taking Neural Shock gives you a ton of CC due to rapid cooldown, and also allows easy headshots with the rifles or pistols. The last full run of ME2 I did was with a Neural Shock Widow Infiltrator and I did not use cloak all that often compared to the above.
As for Soldier, you can play him as a marksman with the Widow if you want. In the thread I talk about soldier being a better Widow sniper... that is of course dependent on perspective. Soldier can deal a lot of damage with the Widow under Adrenaline rush due to the 140% bonus with Heightened AR, however you will not be able to fire again as rapidly. Additionally, if you have trouble aiming you might like the passive scope slowdown of the Infiltrator. I do not think that Cloak makes Infiltrator safer to play than Soldier. The Soldier has extra weapons to fall back on and is a little more durable. For the majority of the game I would thus say Widow Soldier is "stronger" than Widow Infiltrator. However that is not true for Object Rho due to the mechanics of that fight. I would concede however that Widow Soldier is in many ways less fun than Infiltrator. And perhaps the least fun class I played, and I played all of them.
As for ME3, I have only played Infiltrator in MP and in the Demo. I found infiltrator much easier to play than soldier in the demo. In fact, I thought Soldier was the weakest class in the demo. The demo is slightly different than an import playthrough though. I have played through ME3 SP once with a Level 30 soldier import, and that worked very well on Hardcore, at least if you are smart with leveling, smart with weapon choice (I usually only took 2 weapons), etc. And on NG+ Insanity it is fine. Now I don't know how well I would have done with the early game weapons if I did my first run on Insanity, but I think it would have been ok.
Now if you should change classes, I think Infiltrator is going to be great in ME3 based on the demo and multiplayer. I wouldn't bother changing unless you really want to do a Soldier playthrough in ME2. Personally I loved the Soldier with the Viper and Revenant, which is a nice change from a sniper or even CQB Infiltrator.

I'll be honest I'm not entirely sure myself on what I am looking for. I place a heavy emphasis on sniping and being at range.
I played most of the classes in the multi demo which was when I abused the hell out of cloak XD.
It''s nice to get a fresh perspective on things and its given me some food for thought. Chances are I'm sticking with the infiltrator. I don't do well under fire and while you have some very valid points about tactical cloak I feel that it's somewhat better compared to adrenaline rush.
I may reimport my character and choose a soldier as a dummy playthrough and have a look.
But what can I say? I've always been a sniper type person XD
EDIT: after playing around I didn't enjoy the soldier that much. While taking the shots, as predicated I came under fire and did horribly, not that much worse but enough to make me notice. Then went back as an infiltrator and used cloak, incinerate and even sabotage some more. I'm doing awesome. One can't wait to get the Widow!
The only reason I'd stick with the soldier...his omni-blade is too awesome XD

I tried infiltrator in ME2 and suck at it, I'm so used to playing as a soldier, I do prefer to hold back to the rear and snipe in every game I play tho, love Garus in ME2 "funneling all those witless idiots in the scope!"
