Hey team,
Before we begin, let me simply say this: ME3 is an amazing game. I think the reason so much discontent has appeared here and elsewhere is precisely BECAUSE everyone loved the journey of ME3, and more accurately, the journey from the first game to those final moments.
My hope is that Bioware releases substantial post-ending DLC, and who knows, given their abject silence (as opposed to DA2's response, which prompted the occasional rejoinder from a staff member), I think this might actually happen. If, however, there are no current plans for post-ending DLC, let me propose this idea: the Baldur's Gate 2 ending model.
The Baldur's Gate series and the Mass Effect Series share important similarities: similarities which draw them closer to each other, I would suggest, even more so than Bioware's spiritual sequel to Baldur's Gate, the Dragon Age series.
-You control the same character across a 3-game arc, nominally developing them from an unknown fledgling (child of Candlekeep, Alliance soldier) into an avatar of justice/destruction (child of Bhaal/galaxy-renowned Reaper destroyer)
-Your allies and party members persist across these games, developing story arcs, romances and eventual pay-offs for both
-Your character's battle is as much an internal one as it is an external one (fighting your Bhaalspawn nature/trying to save the galaxy whilst battling self-doubt, frustration and inter-species mistrust)
-The overall continuity between characters/games/narratives is constant and there is a special sense of progression, achievement and reward
Baldur's Gate, its sequel and the Throne of Bhaal expansion occupy a nostalgic and special place in any Bioware fan's heart. The ending, wherein
*ANCIENT SPOILER*
you decide to embrace or reject your godhood is fantastic. It satisfies, it makes sense and the moment is shared with your allies as your character makes the most important decision of their life. And yet, I personally believe the ending of the BG series is best because of the denouement. A static picture of each of your companions is accompanied by music and scrolling text of what happens to them after the game, based on your actions. Bioware have such a fantastic way of drawing you into their characters' lives, and so the text endings were simply the icing on the cake to a great saga. In fact, I think some users' signatures here on BSN quote directly from the Minsc and Boo ending text.
So why not release this as DLC?
Static pictures of crew members, their theme music, and a satisfying conclusion, dynamically adjusted for your play experience. Ideally, the voice actor for the Codex could come in for one last session and record it, but even non-voiced this would tie a neat bow on the space saga we've come to invest so much in.
Now - again, if the ending is a hallucination, and more comprehensive DLC is in the wings, great. Thank you Bioware, please excuse these musings. But if there isn't any post-ending DLC planned, why not release a patch appropriating the Baldur's Gate style of ending and using it for Mass Effect 3? It will barely cost anything (relative to the profit margins currently expected to accrue for a megagame like this one), tacks on to the end of the game and, at most, involves one voice actor.
Does anyone think this is unreasonable?
Inexpensive, feasible and (probably) satisfying post-ending DLC: a realistic plan based on the BG2 model
