Mouse-based navigation - requires pinpoint accuracy?

I'm OK with the 'click here to go here' interface and like it much better than WASD for general exploration etc. - but one major complaint... I sometimes have to go through SO many 'false clicks' before I actually hit an area that I can go to!

Click on this area of room - nope. 1/16" to the left? Oh, THAT's ok, no problem. Let's go down this trail or cave. Here? Nope. Here (slightly closer)? Nope. Here (slightly further)? Nope. Random clickage after x number of failed attempts? OK, fine.

I've got to be missing something really basic, because I can't see a BIT of difference between one seemingly unobstructed area and another - yet it seriously is about a 1 out of 3 chance for me to be able to hit a navigable area on the first click.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there the equivalent of the TAB key to highlight places where you can actually walk??? :(

Actually if you hold the right mouse button down, it changes the way the WASD keys works. Also of you hold both mouse buttons down you move forward and are able to move the camera about at the same time. That what I do anyway.

Hmmm - might fiddle with that mode... I just wish that there was a way to distinguish a clickable destination from a non-clickable one without having to just try spots until you find one that works... It's great in places like Redcliffe where there's lots of levels of elevation, twists and turns, etc. to just click on the desired place and the whole gang speeds off downstairs, around corners etc much faster than "steering" there. And then, minutes later, inside a building with nothing but clear floor between point A and B but 90% of the space in between is non-clickable...

BTW, by 'clear floor', I mean unobstructed, although clear floors would be interesting...
