Then choose to 'Destroy the Reapers'... and despite all of that, I didn't see the extra shot of Shepard among the wreckage.
How come? Anybody knows why?

Shepard survives is destroy only.
you need 4000 EMS if you pass TIM persuasion check (and "save" Anderson
as a result) or 5000EMS if you don't.
ONLY works with destroy "red" ending.
to
pass TIM persuasion check, you have to use persuasion options (renegade
or paragon - doesn't matter, but persuasion options must be used) in
all 3 conversation you have with him. if you don't pass persuasion
check on Mars, even with maximum reputation, you will not be able to get
that last persuasion option with him

As the above poster has said, Shepard will only survive in red, synthetic destruction ending. Has nothing to do with a NG+ game. Shepard will always die in the other endings.

Makes sense about the Illusive Man. The strange thing is I did have 5000++ EMS and still, TIM made Shepard shot Anderson... ??!
About the persuasion check on Mars, that's interesting, I don't recall whether I had it or not. I imagine I would have had it (at least the paragon option) because I imported my ME2 100% paragon Shepard into ME3 and started the game at level 30 etc.
Were you playing a NG+ ?

The other above posters mention that Shepard can only survive if player has 5000++ EMS and it's a NG+ which would make sense because I had above 6000 EMS and chosed 'Destroy Reapers' but didn't see Shepard survive. I guess I'll have to do a 2nd playthrough to get it?! and hopefully that save file would mean something for the DLCs, otherwise what's the point of it...

If I'm not mistaken, NG+ means second playthrough. Once you finish the game, import your last save file to restart the story and play through again.

nope, just ME1 & 2 import, mostly paragon with a smidgen of renegade. I used persuade options in every conversation with him and ended up getting TIm to suicide, ala Saren. I cannot bring myself to reimport again. I'm mostly just doing couple of non-import speed runs right now, to test a certain theory and play around with different classes. can't replay this game with any manner of involvement as long as the endings are the way they are.
now - your EMS has zero affect on whether you get to save Anderson or not. it is entirely dependent on you passing persuasion checks with TIM, every single conversation.
EMS score only affects if you get that extra cut scene with destroy ending. (and if you do "save" Anderson - you need 4000, but you can still get Shepard lives ending even if you didn't save Anderson... with 5000 EMS score)
I hope this made a little be more sense.

I'll say it again, NG+ isn't needed. Shepard's survival is implied. If you have over 5k EMS, right before the credits roll, you see a N7 logo on some battleworn armor in the midst of citadel rubble and then you hear some one gasp for air. That's what people are talking about when they say shepard survives. You might not see him/her but it's implied. If you don't believe me, just go youtube it.
edit: grammar

Yes that makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
One more question: To get the extra cut scene with destroy ending whereby Shepard survives, does it have to be NG+? It sounds like yours wasn't. That'd be odd then because I did have 5000+ EMS. Also, in my version, TIM did kill himself too.
I hear you re: not too inspired for replaying the game given the not so inspiring endings. A real bummer for us all!!

This
the ending I got, only difference is it was liara standing next joker
instead of garrus. I imported my save from ME1+ME2. And don't worry,
even with shepard surviving it's still a pretty crappy ending no matter
how you choose to look at it.
Didn't bioware promise us a final
game that wouldn't leave us with unanswered questions, a game where our
choices would actually matter and determine the outcome of the story.
And finally give use closure?
What did we get? Deus ex machina
space casper, Normandy inexplicably flying off somewhere in the middle
of the confrontation with the reapers at FTL speed with crewmates which
magically teleported from earth. And the prospect of knowing our
Shepard's will never see their love interest again(mine was liara)
Bioware knows how to troll alright.

Don't feel stupid for asking... right now we are all dumbstruck by the way the endings came together.
I don't think a 2nd playthrough gives you extra EMS, I might be wrong about that. I'll start a NG+ to see, and let you know. You can increase your EMS by playing multiplyer for increasing the readiness rating percentage, which is BioWare's clever way to incite players to spend time on the multipayer. The multiplayer isn't so bad actually.

I just want to throw this out there so you don't expect anything else. You 'save' Anderson. Shepard still shoots him, and he still dies, but you have some dialogue with him which is...well. It's really just fantastic.
