I had the same problem.

It's because I didn't reach the 4,000 EMS minimum BEFORE I went to The Illusive Man's base. My score was about 3,500 when I did that level.

I saved right before I went to Earth, played multiplayer to get my score up to 5,000+, and finished the game... I didn't get the Shepard survives ending, even though I persuaded TIM to shoot himself, and I chose the Destroy ending too.

You're supposed to reach the score you want before you go to the Illusive Man's base.

The game rewards you the "Master and Commander" achievement when you land on his base, so I'm taking that as a sign that the game "checks" your score at that point and uses that to determine whether or not you get the "Shepard is alive" ending.

That makes total sense!  I was wondering about that, about when does the game actually check for the EMS points.

Some people told me right before the ending credits, which turns out to be untrue it seems.

Thanks much!!

Right now, I've still got 6000++ EMS. I'll redo the Illusive man's mission and hopefully that'll take me there to the Sephard-lives ending... and more hopefully, the next DLC will fill the gaps and tie the knots in the Shepard story of the ME saga.

omfg, im in the same case, I only had 2.6k EMS with 50% readiness when going into cerberus base. After that I rushed in multiplayer and managed to get 5k EMS before I goto earth. Thanks for the heads up!

How can it do the check at the Illusive Man's base if you get the Reaper Heart/Brain from it as an asset?

I think the game only checks during the conversation with Anderson before you actually land on the base, because that's the exact moment when Master and Commander achievement is unlocked.

I was actually able to get the "best ending" where Shepard is presumed to be alive on the first playthrough. EMS was 5170 and Galactic Readiness was 100%.

I had to play a lot of multiplayer to get it though. I noticed that the readiness wasn't moving up very much and so using multiplayer, I was able to get it to 100%. I really don't think you could get it on the first playthrouh without using multiplayer because I did most of the side missions and the readiness wouldn't move above 50%.

Same here except without the MP I was able to get 60-70% readiness. I think it is impossible to get the galactic readiness above 60-70% without MP.

So even though your EMS was enough, your Galactic Readiness probably wasn't. I got 7000+ EMS and 100/99% readiness and my Shep lived, as she should.

I'd like to know how you did that.  The only way I know to increase readiness is by MP.

Try not saving Anderson, just let TIM kill him.

OP,

The EMS check happens before you enter Cerberus' space station, not when you direct your forces to attack Earth. I raised my EMS through multiplayer between the two events and had to go back and replay the Cerberus space station event (kill Kai Leng) before I saw the extra cut scene. It has nothing to do with NG+, and you CAN reload an old save with your new multiplayer boosted EMS to "fix" your current character where Shepard lives.

On a similar topic, I've got to ask: How do you get that last Paragon/Renegade option on TIM? Both my sister and I did not get it, despite getting every other "persuade" in the game. Do you need to have the Reputation meter completely maxed out? We were both very, very close, but there was still a bit of a gap there.

I think your meter has to be maxxed.  However, I don't think it has to be filled with one alignment.  My meter was maxxed out with probably 95% Renegade and 5% Paragon and I was able to access both dialogue options for each check.  I had pretty much chosen the Renegade dialogue options throughout the game but I also did some of the Paragon interrupts as well.

As for the "Shepard survives" ending, if you're going for the 5000+ EMS, Shepard only survives via destroying the reapers (the red side).  The Synthesis and Control endings result in Shepard dying (I did the Synthesis the first time and my Shepard was dead).  I think the only way Shepard survives in these other two scenarios is if your EMS is less than 5000 and whether TIM kills Anderson or not.

Question - I didn't have my meter maxed (I was just the tiniest bit short) so I didn't get the chance to use that last paragon option. I did, however, use the renegade interrupt to kill TIM and save Anderson. I destroyed the Reapers and finished the game with over 5k EMS, but I'm like 99% certain that I didn't see the Shepard twitch.

Does it only register as a "perfect" finish if you get that last influence option? Did using the renegade interrupt lock me out of it?

There's a chance that I may have been so emotionally drained that I just missed it...but I was looking closely. I'm curious to know if not having that last option available is what did it.

Dunno if this was already mentioned, but apparrently the EMS check occurs when you dock at Cronos Station, not when you send the fleets to Earth. I found this out the hard way last night.

Essentially, you need to grind your readiness to 100% before hitting TIM's base rather than before heading to Earth. As a result, It looks like I'm going to need to replay from Cronos through the Citadel return again to get the ending I was shooting for.

Edit: Ah, apparrently was already mentioned a few days ago.

Dammit. That'd do it.

I hit Cronos, then played a few matches of MP to before I headed to Priority: Earth. If that's the case, I was under 4k, even.

I still had the three endings available to me.

Yeah, that was my plan as well (raise readiness just before heading to Earth) since I didn't want it to decay if I had a few days between the TIM base and Earth missions (windows for play time can be a little unpredictable for me).

At least you get kicked back to a chapter save just before Cronos after the ending.

I was maxed on reputation w/ one bar of renegade, the rest paragon and the final TIM persuade options were greyed out.

I've been led to believe that you have to persuade TIM w/ exclusively the paragon or exclusively the renegade options at every other opportunity in ME3 in order for the final persuade at the Citadel to be available.  I can recall one instance where I had taken the renegade persuade rather than the paragon one in this playthrough.
