The one thing that would make Mass Effect even more awesome is to combine the 3 games into one.

Most people would say that it's impossible and impractical, though they're only half-right...

Imagine going from one game into the next in one smooth transition. Imagine visiting Omega in ME1 or the Presidium in ME2 and 3. Creating a consistent sense of place across the 3 games and enabling the use of art assets across all 3.

I'd imagine that a project like this would be pretty big, but worth it. Most of the art assets are done, game design only needs retooling, voiceovers are all done... I'd imagine that the refurbishing of the games would cost about the same as one new game, maybe even a bit less, since most of the work would be in adjusting level design and scripting.

Gameplay

Pretty simple: Keep the gameplay from ME3. While i'm still not sold on the use of thermal clips, they work for their intended purpose. I'd still rather see a combined pool for all the weapons instead of a seperate pool for each class, the clips are supposed to be universal after all. Still, ME3's combat works and should be easily adaptable to ME1 (ME2 is nearly identical anyway).

Paragon/Renegade hasn't changed either. The simplified system from ME2 and 3 regarding conversations would work in ME1 aswell.

The one problem with this would be the levelling and paragon/renegade meter across the 3 games. Again, ME3's system would be the happy medium between 1 and 2, though i'd seriously consider taking a good long look at the ammo powers - They're simply boring. If in doubt, they can stay as is though. I'd also consider expanding the bonus powers to 2 instead of 1, giving all classes a bit more room to play with and make choices matter more, it's too easy to max out on everything currently (even though that happens late).

A problem would also be the possible complications with choosing a new class and face at the start of the 2 and 3 parts, though it might not be necessary anymore if the games are combined, giving a greater sense of continuity.

Game Design

The Mako parts, in extension to the gameplay, would need the most retooling. I'd suggest keeping them in though but making them less intrusive. Retool the planets to give them less of a random layout and more structured 'roads', providing an optimal path to all the points of interest without taking away the freedom of movement. This should take care of any problems with it's handling aswell. Editing the heightmaps should not be much work at all as the planets are otherwise relatively empty.

So why keep the Mako in at all? Well, because most missions in ME1 would need some MASSIVE redesigning if it wasn't there. It would also give some sense of continuity across the games if it was possible to explore some planets in the 2 and 3 parts of the game and while not necessary they might give a more varied gameplay overall. Together with the retooling of the planets themselves it shouldn't feel as 'broken' as it does for some people.

This leads into the ME2 scanning - Remove it! It's pointless and grindy, even moreso than anything the Mako would ever have been.

Scanning like in ME3 was pretty decent, even though it was still somewhat tedious. However, this kind of scanning could also lead to dropping on planets with the Mako or Hammerhead, rather than landing in an arbitrary spot, making the entire thing feel much more organic and logical.

Which leads into space: The way it's done in ME3 is fine, but remove fuel! It's nothing but tedious and hampers the game so much more than it helps it.

I'd also look into retooling most of the combat levels to get rid of the Gears of War feel to them - Less chest high walls and more natural looking spots for cover please! The level design in ME1 was spot on for this - It never felt like all those objects were put there just to provide cover, they felt entirely natural. ME2 and 3 though liked to dot the landscape with chest high walls galore, sucking a lot of the immersion out of it and making moving around a bit of a chore. While this may not be entirely possible, it can be done by simply removing a few things in the 2 and 3 levels.

Making the citadel one continuous place across all 3 games would also be a pretty good idea. It's rather jarring to see how the place changes with every game, why not keep the important areas the same? The way it was done in ME1 was probably best, while keeping quick travel around. The citadel embassies are especially superfluous in ME3, otherwise i think all the areas could be interconnected somehow, making the citadel a massive place to explore in all 3 stages of the combined game - Though i can see a reason for blocking off parts of it and giving the player access as he progresses through the games.

One other massive thing...

The possibility of completely throwing around the ME2 mission structure! For example, picking up Legion earlier or Garrus later on - Finally making use of all that unused dialogue! Since this structure was done purely for the benefit of not having to install on consoles it doesn't make sense to keep it around like that when the combined game would have to be installed anyway, PC or console alike. Hamstringing your game like this just because of some people who were too cheap to get a proper HD for their consoles..... Well, that's bad! Especially if you offer DLC's which are rather large on their own anyway.

Bugfixing

This one's simple: Combining the games also gives the opportunity to iron out all of the issues and bugs. On a sidenote, it enables the use of the proper walking and running animations from ME1 in the other games! I'm still having nightmares from how femshep was walking in the Kasumi mission.... >_>

Also, fixing the 'stuck' bugs from ME2 and 3 which mostly consist of geometry errors and generally giving the game a bit of polish. Some of the areas in ME3 also need a lick of paint - The Rachni cave in ME3 looks like a Quake 2 level.

More to come...

Still working on the other parts, but i think one combined game would work really well. The one problem i can see happening is that it won't fit on 2 dvd's, but honestly, that doesn't bother me one bit if it gets you a massive game like that in return.
