The point of Jacob and Vega is that each individual player decides what is the point of this two characters. That's the point.

I liked Vega - I found myself smiling every time he called me Lola! Should have been a LI!

The majority of human squadmates are terrible. Anderson and Joker are much better developed and much more interesting than Kaiden, Jacob and Vega. I would have loved to have Anderson as a squadmate option, even if he was just a soldier. Even Hackett was more interesting although that may have come purely from the fact he was voiced by Lance Henriksen.

Still, it may not be a coincidence the "soldier" humans are the least interesting of all the characters available.

I liked both. Shocker, I ain't here looking for the maniacs (Like Jack) or people with crazy life stories. (Miranda)

Kaiden, Jacob and James... I could do without all three. At least Kaiden I got to nuke. :)

James is about the least interesting character in the entire series unless something BIG happens in the last act of the game I haven't hit yet. Someone has to have the title and I can't think of anyone I wouldn't swap out with him in ME3. I'm disappointed that we got him instead of having a returnee back.

I think the people feeling the racial stereotypes are taken too far in ME3 have a point. The Mass Effect universe, which by canon has a very homogenous, globalised human race - many of the main characters; Udina, Anderson, Chakwas, Kaidan, Ashley, Adams represent what Americans refer to as "ethnic minorities", that is non-whites (depending on how you classify Hispanic people I guess.)

With Esteban and especially Vega throwing ethnic slang all over the place in ME3 it felt pretty tacky and unnecessary since the human characters were already very diverse. The same was true with Kasumi in ME2 though ("I like ramen!", "I'm cute, petite and Japanese!"), who was also very jarring.

All in all though, the "normal" Alliance humans felt very boring in the entire series. Zaeed and Miranda break from the norm by being respectively a human krogan and a genetically enhanced femmefatale, but it's no coincidence that Ashley, Kaidan, Vega and Jacob are probably the least liked characters in the games.

This is moronic. Tali is never stops being overtly Quarian and Grunt spends his entire existence trying to learn to be a proper Krogan. Why does enthicity from human beings bother people so much?

There's no conspiracy. Putting minorities in a videogame or any work of fiction is NOT shoehorning. God forbid non-white people exist in nerdery. My goodness.

Well ultimately the point is to have a well-rounded squad so that whatever class Shepard chooses, there will always be the other classes to fill in the holes.

Vega is about as close to a Krogan soldier as a human can get. Vega is much more likable than Jacob ever was. Jacob seems to have been humanized in ME3, because in ME2 he came off like a jerk.

I have a Shepard with Jacob, but I also consider her to like boring men.  She was with Kaidan in ME1.

Jacob rubbed me the wrong way at time with his comments to Tali and Thane when they both got on the Normandy.

The devs had to take into account that people like Garrus, Wrex, Tali, Kaidan/Ash are KIA and not avaiable in ME3.  Which is why we have EDI as the engineer.  You take them away and what do you have for squadmates?  Liara and EDI.  You need to have a well rounded squad to make it easier on Shepard.

OP, you are forgetting one thing.  All of the ME2 squad had NADA to do with the Alliance.  The Normandy isn't a private vessel any more, it's an Alliance warship.  Alliance soldiers are going to be on board.

well to tell the truth after completing no one left behind achievement for sucide mission in ME2 I replayed it and made sure to kill off Jacob cause he was so annoying.  I felt better.

I like both characters, actually.

Jacob is always portrayed as a good guy who just wants to get things done. And to try to do the right thing in the process. Much like my Sheploo.

Vega offers down-to-earth humor to the adventure, in addition to his combat advantages in the game. I enjoyed the banter between him, Cortez, and the other squaddies. And it was funny to overhear him lose his ass at cards on the Citadel. Like Jacob in ME2, he also offers a common enlisted man's perspective on things.

All of these things makes them worthwhile characters in Mass Effect.

I will be honest here. .I went into ME3 wanting to be disgusted at James taking a seat from an established character. Late character syndrome not even begin to cover it, and him pandering to new arrivals to the franchise? call me elitist if you must but they can play the games or read online, there's no need to knock out a returnee for a character to pander to the newbs, so to speak.

..but then I got in game and I liked the guy quite a bit -- I also agree I like James as a character far bloody better than I ever liked Kaidan or Ash, even if their more obnoxious character points got sanded down a bit in 3.

..as for Jacob? Eh. He blipped my radar not all for betetr or worse, aside finding he got one decently good line taking the Renegade option on his loyalty mission. Other than that.. eh.

I do like James though, and did willingly use him when his talents and toughness were ueful for the scenario.

I actually appreciated both characters. Normal people in a sea of crazy. Between Drell assassins and lesbian asari and murderous Salarian doctors, tank-bred Krogan and Krogan warlords, crazed experimental biotics with more tattoos than they have room for and genetically engineered cheerleaders, it's nice to have down to earth people who are just people.

Jacob and James are bros as far as I'm concerned.

Totally agree. I didn't care for Jacob - as a LI he was just really lacking in character compared to Garrus or Thane in ME2, but I didn't hate him either.  I really liked James. He's simple, and that's a compliment to him. It would have been nice if they fleshed out these characters a little more though. There's a lot of potential there that just doesn't happen. Besides, not every NPC can be completely amazing.

They're both "everymen" characters, most stories have one of those type of characters people can relate to. Jacob is meant to be the foil to a ship full of crazies, while Vega is meant to allow new players to familiarize themselves with the in game universe.

I like "Loco" Vega :P, he is a good squad mate on combat and it's a cool character.
Jacob is fine too but Vega is better.

Jacob seems to have been humanized in ME3, because in ME2 he came off like a jerk.

I like Jacob. I think he's a honest, honorable and courageous man who I'd be proud to have at my back in a fight. Unfortunately, he's utterly dull as a romantic interest. Hence his lack of a fanbase.

Unless, of course, you romanced him and then it's the exact opposite. He comes off as more human in ME2 and a jerk when he cheats on you in ME3 ahd he's not at all honorable when he doesn't send you an email or something letting you know that you are no longer dating.

and lesbian asari

Asari aren't lesbians. They aren't actually females since they don't actually have a gender.

Firstly, I don't see how Chakwas, Kaidan, or Adams are minorities. Secondly, didn't the Mass Relays only get discovered thirty years ago or so? And it only all takes place less than 200 years in the future anyway. People who were around when the First Contact War happened are still alive and kicking in ME3. I don't think that's enough time for humanity to become a homogenous globalized society.

They're both "everymen" characters, most stories have one of those type of characters people can relate to.

I think you've just nailed why I hate them (well...besides Vega's constant sexual harassment and Jacob telling you you're going to die alone). I hate the "everyman" character type.

I like Kaidan for being down to earth and you know sane... He is the most grounded of your squadmates so I guess that makes him the least interesting cause shepard can't really fix him all that much ... and ME players seem to have mini god complexes XD

I thought i'd like Jacob when he was introduced as being upfront and honest, While miranda is all about half truth's and ice walls

but then Jacob comes stand offish and aloof...

Vega... I'm honestly confused on how people can hate Vega? Him, Garrus and Cortez's banters are some of the funniest damn crap in the game. It's so much Brotatude? and unlike Ashley whose stuck in 50% ***** mode... Vega's barely as insubordinate, his just personable.

Vega... I'm honestly confused on how people can hate Vega?

Well, he does sexually harass a female Shepard almost constantly. If you're interested in him it can come off as flirting but if you're not then it's sexual harassment.

Should sue BioWare for all that unwanted attention.

Anyway, these kinds of threads are dumb... people will like what they like even if you the individual to not like it.

I love Vega.  James is my bro, and he is a badass... new or not, he was a welcome addition to the crew.

Talking to Vega more and more, he is entertaining, I give him that..... suppose my point is, Jacob and James are tag along companions..... You could of just went around Jacob on the station, leaving him to fend off robot guards by himself and doubt anyone would give two craps. Vega, he wanted to stay on planet so bad, could of just left him; wouldn't of mattered.

James is great. He has alot of humorous dialogue and its nice to have a "normal" character. I also found him a well suited squadmate for my infiltrator.
