Heavy Shotguns:
Graal - this thing is very accurate and does a lot of damage at close or mid range. Occasionally you can even use it to snipe at long range at a stationary or predictable target. I am not sure if the projectiles track like the Geth Plasma Shotgun. The projectiles also seem to travel faster than the GPS, although it could just be an illusion since you don't see glowing green balls streaking towards the enemy.
Geth Plasma Shotgun - the charge function on the gun is where the fun starts. It's not as accurate as the Graal, but another way to look at it is its got bigger spread for taking down a group of enemies. I find the GPS compliments AoE abilities like Carnage very well - you can drop groups of lightly defended enemies very quickly.
Claymore - while the Graal and GPS are more like mid-range weapons and can both function decently at long range, the Claymore is definitely a close-range weapon. However, it is severely limited by its clip size - you better be sure you can drop something in one shot (or have powers/escape plan for backup).
Personally I think Graal is the most versatile of the three on Gold, but if you are going for CQC any of them will do.
Light shotguns:
Disciple - this thing is great. It's lighter than several heavy pistols including the Talon (!) and staggers every shot, which is extremely useful for CQC. It's not very accurate though, so don't expect to hit anything with a full spread at mid range consistently.

The fact that it fires so much faster than any other shotgun means you can Nova a group of enemies, charge the strongest one, and they quickly pull of point blank headshots on any living bad guys with ease.

I find that the Scimitar doesn't finish off everything in one shot unless you headshot and a high level Katana or Disciple is lighter and the ability to one-shot bodyshot makes cleanup easier and about the same speed since you don't have to take the time to lineup your shots. They also one-shot guardians if you headshot where I've never had the Scimitar do the same. Of course, I only had a Scimitar IV at the time. Maybe a X will do it on Bronze.I honestly like the Scimitar. The only class I use equip with a shot gun is my Human Vanguard. As this class you tend to spend most of your time performing the Nova>Charge combo so weight is a big factor for me.

I use a Level VIII Katana with my Asari Vanguard, I'll take the weight over the oomph. I also liked the Geth Shotgun, but it was too heavy for Sarina.

It's spikes, literally. I see tons of them just sticking out of a Guardian's little mail slot when I'm aiming for their head

As for multiplayer, I roll a Scimitar on my Turian Soldier with Marksman. Marksman pretty much turns the shotgun full-auto, great for crowd control.

Yes, two shots with a Katana significantly outdamaged one with a Claymore. But I found that I often had to put myself at a bit of risk pulling off that second shot. The timing was almost perfect, but not quite right. Furthermore, the reload time for the Claymore synched up almost perfectly with my invisibility cooldown. Basically, everything for Claymore worked perfectly with my style and timers to make for extremely high burst with almost no risk. Perhaps had I gone for the increased damage option on the final cloak upgrade it'd be different. But going for the power use option (in conjunction with proximity mines) makes for such a safe style that really complements the Claymore.
That just reinforces in my mind how ridiculously circumstantial weapons are in this game, especially shotguns. In what circumstances are you guys having such success with some of these weapons?

I can't hit anything up close with the GPS either. It's a gun that makes sense if you know you're going to be holding a chokepoint at medium range. It's also surprisingly good against the big enemies at a distance.

One of the coolest-looking guns in the game, in my opinion.
