 I have had it happen quit a few times in-game where I'd escape a banshee and get several feet away from it then watch as my charachter slides backwords while still running and facing the direction I was looking until I am dragged all the way back to the banshee which then does the 1-hit kill move it has of grabbing you then stabbing you with its arm.

Had this happen to me plenty of times. You think you manage to get away from them, till you are teleported back into their grasp. Similarly, Husks can grab you while you are punching them, or gutting them with the Omni-Blade.
