Just thinking out loud:

With all the new information from ME3, there's one thing i've been thinking about...

The Reapers themselves try to make a case for them surviving at all costs in the ending - Their primary perogative taking the form of what is possibly a hallucination of Shepard. Control or synthesis are suggested as the proper choices, with destruction being presented as a renegade choice.

They talk about the preservation of organic races and how synthetic races will always win (sound familiar?) when invented or created (lending even more credence to the hallucination theory and the red ending being the proper one).

So then it occured to me, on a tangent, who created the reapers? Who started the cycle? Assuming the guardian is not actually real and presented as a figure to guide Shepard, it's existence can be discounted as it's still the reapers calling the shots.

The keepers are awfully proficient at maintaining the citadel and they seem to have been infused at least partially with synthetics. They're controlled by the reapers, or were at least, but they don't show the same 'sophistication' as other hybrid reaper forces (the blue nanite thing, if you will).

Wouldn't this make the keepers a highly probable candidate for the race which originally created them? They were overthrown by the newly created synthetic life and somehow it got warped into the logic of harvesting races in order to keep them safe, as the reapers themselves have rebelled against their creators - Transcendent circular reasoning, if you will.




Then there's Harbinger.

Short one: Prothean reaper. Despite the information in ME2 it seems rather strange that he has 4 eyes and a very familiar eye color to the collectors and reapers. Isn't it possible that while the Protheans were not 'compatible' for the reaper creation process, the Collectors might have been given their rearranged genetic code?
