Ok, here's what I understand:
Paragon and Renegade Rep still come into play. Both of them, in a sense, are 'added' together. While individual points for just paragon or renegade can be added, both of them can be added by 'reputation'.
However, here is what I want to know:
1. If you don't have enough paragon or renegade, is it greyed out, or does it show something else to indicate it won't work? I have a hard time telling whether or not my paragon options will work because of how blurry the text is.
2. For a ratio of both alignments together, how much of one alignment do you need to make it so you can't have both unlocked? (I.E.: 60/40, 75/25, 55/45?)
3. If you fill the entire bar, does any excess points for your reputation get 'magically' added up or does it just go to waste?
So, how does ME3's rep system work again?

I found that it let me have as much Renegade and Paragon as I liked, but as soon as Paragon hit the top, Renegade stopped increasing, despite me getting dozens more Renegade points. However, both were above the "highest" mark for convo options/interrupts, so that wasn't a problem.

I honestly don't understand why they measure Paragon/Renegade usage at all, actually.
After using TWO renegade actions (no dialogue options), I was still given the opportunity to select the final renegade dialogue option at the end of the game. Therefore, it seems like dialogue options are based on reputation alone, as opposed to where your paragon/renegade status lies.

They measure paragon/renegade usage so you can see how many more scars than can cram onto your face. Also, as I've discovered, the auto-dialogue changes based on whether you're renegade or paragon. For instance paragon Shepard in one situation would automatically say, "People, if we stick together we can make it through this." Renegade Shepard would growl, "If you want to keep your asses intact, just keep on shooting."
I've also noticed that my renegade Shepard is a better dancer than my paragon Shepard and that his music sounds different.
In addition, your default armor color is different when you first get it depending on if you were renegade or Paragon.
So your renegade/paragon score changes your character's default behavior, but as a player you can still make whatever decisions you need to accomplish the task at hand. And those decisions further alter your character's default behavior more or less toward paragon or renegade.

One thing I didn't understand is that my bar was maxed. I had chosen a total of ONE renegade action or response.
I could NOT pick the very last paragon option.
So I guess my question is: do renegade points prevent you from maxing paragon and vice versa? Or do you just need insane amounts?

Someone said that some of the paragon choices are linked. Can't verify that, but I heard the last paragon choice, you had to have taken all paragon choices with that character throughout the game.

The last paragon and renegade option is dependent on not only your rep., but also on your total military strength score. Think you need a score of 4000 to get the last option available.

I noticed this two when talking to EDI with a renegade shep on a second playthrough
