Why are the textures so bad in PC ME1?

I know that there is a mod out there or something that fixes the textures in ME1 for the PC version, but how long has this been? When the PC version shipped in 2008, was it always this bad? Did it ship with crappy textures? Or is this just something that happens to those who by the digital versions though Steam/Origin.

I bought the digital version of ME1 off of origin and the textures are BAD! Almost made me want to just skip and and use the Genesis comic heading into ME2. So why is this? Has there ever been an official or even unofficial reasoning from Bioware/EA as to why this is?

Also, if I want to make the textures look better, how do I do so?

Here is a link to the texture mod you're talking about:

http://social.biowar...index/5314761/1

You have to remember, when the game was shipped in 2008, it was developed by Microsoft, not EA/Bioware. They were working with a limited budget and they weren't sure if the game was going to be a hit with PC gamers or not.

If you use the texture pack I posted, don't expect miracles to happen. They will enhance the main characters features, but not the ship and other images in the game. Remember, you're going backwards when it come to playing the ME games, playing ME2 first would no doubt make ME1 look pretty crappy. But remember this; there is no alternative available that can take the place of playing ME1 given all the missions, decisions, conversations, romance, attachment to characters, and so on. I really enjoyed the fact that in ME1 you could land on a planet, drive around on the surface looking for things (I don't wanna give away any spoilers in case you do play it) and actually being about to engage in battle while in the vehicle shooting off the cannon. You don't have that option in ME2 and ME3.

Just try to hang in there and give it a chance. Give it about 4-6 hours and I promise it'll be worth it once the game takes off. Also, you cannot replace the feeling of "oh damn, that's what happened!!" after playing ME1 then finding out the result in ME2 or ME3. The series is the best trilogy of games I've ever played. And being the "space" and "astronomy" fan that I am, and enjoying games that allow you to search out other planets, I don't know if I'll ever see another game like this anytime soon.

I really hope this posts helps you, and if you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll keep an eye on this thread for the next few days.

Honest and unfortunate truth is because consoles don't have as high-res of textures as PCs. The particularly bad offender is Garrus; due to a bug, even on the highest graphics settings, his face is still a blocky mess. The bug is unfortunately unpatchable, although there are workarounds. The easiest involves editing the Coalesced.ini file, but should only be done if you have a good computer, because it just forces everything to always use high-res textures.

Enable AFx16 for better textures btw. Also the previous poster is correct it is possible to edit lod levels for even better textures. (me1 has normal .inis not coal.bin, so plain text)
