I was also expecting to find out that the Crucible was a trap created by and passed down by the Reapers and that upon discovering this, the armada would have no choice but to duke it out with the Reapers; but, I think the main point that this game tries to drive home is that Reapers can not be defeated by conventional means. Even with the biggest fleet ever assembled , the armada doesnt stand a chance in a direct attack; their only hope is to buy the crucible enough time to fire.
I agree, this a great fourt option that should have been offered.
Being unable to win was what everyone feared, but then again the entire galaxy uniting as one to face the Reapers has never, ever happened before.
And it's not like the entire series isn't built on overcoming impossible odds, remember; They Said It Was A Suicide Mission...

This would have been epic.
it is certainly far more emotionally charged and story fulfilling than what we got.
it also makes a lot more sense.

How could they mess it up they way it was rendered in the actual game ?

I also think that whether or not Shepard lives or dies is dependent on how many war assets you have acquired and what choices you made throughout the trilogy. Also, Shepard could reunite with the crew down on Earth and then have a happy ending. A renegade playthrough with low assets etc could see the fleet struggle and Shepard use the crucible to sacrifice himself or something...

I would've been able to handle all the other crap if this was an option. This was the ending we all wanted, the one we still want. If we made good choices in ME1 and ME2, got nearly all or all of the War Assets, we should've fought the reapers as described here. Not be forced to subject ourselves to the star child and the reapers.

This would be a good end. Maybe not what all would have liked, but still, it's better than that inconceivable stuff EA calls an ending.
Show us that our choices actually matters, that what we have done in the numerous hours we've invested into this game, means something.
Thank you, OP, for this ending. Hopefully, Bioware will do something along those lines. Or something else, for that matter, as long as it shows us that our choices matters.
