SHepard: No you've given me YOUR options. We've shown you we can win, and you're looking for a way out, a way to cripple us because you can't do it the way you used to. You failed at playing God and now you want me to wipe out your mistakes! Well I won't. I choose what we've ALWAYS chosen. I choose to take our damn chances.
How does that make sense though? The catalyst is encouraging Shepard to choose from three options, one of which will destroy the reapers and one of which will allow shepard to control them. If they were looking for a way out, why are they encouraging shepard to use the crucible which is going to probably destroy them?
Also, the whole game was built round the construction of the crucible, now it just means nothing..?

It's hard to explain away, but maybe because they're counting on Shepard not wanting to destroy ALL synthetic life (Geth, EDI) and that he would pick either Control or Synthesis.
Again, I think the OP tried to stay within the confines of the official ending and not veer too much away from it, and I think he did an excellent job.
As for the Crucible, I guess you can explain it as part of the Reaper's plan all along - have the civilizations waste their remaining resources and manpower constructing their own doomsday device.

Bravo to you, good sir.
And as someone said in a different post : "THIS is the difference between a forum full of rage and a forum full of cheers, joy and congratulations and a gaming company growing even more."
It's sad that EAware doesn't realize that anymore.

It's always been in Shephard's character that he beats the odds. It just goes against what's been set up that in the final confrontation it isn't possible. Well, I don't see that to be good writing if you contradict yourself, so I really like this ending for keeping with the trend.
As to explain the idea of the Catalyst looking for a way out, think of it like this. What if the catalyst doesn't destroy the reapers? What if it just destroys the relays. Thereby eliminating the ability for the galaxy to counter-attack. Everything you learn of the Catalyst is from the speculation of characters throughout the game so it's definitely possible that they were wrong and that the Catalyst was a plan from the reapers all along, as every species to try and build it were wiped out. So we have no real way of ensuring the origin of the plan, for all we know it could be older than the protheans, with only the protheans having left records of it.
I honestly would have preferred this as the baseline ending. You have x number of War Assets you can do this, You have < x number of assets then perhaps Shephard sees the destruction around him and rushes to activate the machine not knowing it's entire purpose and you recieve a bad ending. If you have > let's say 2x number of assets, then you may potentially get a better ending in which you see an extended scene and epilogue. Like it cuts as the battle reaches a crescendo and when the screen clears you see various characters digging through the rubble of Earth with Shephard narrating the ending of the Reaper War.
I mean yes I know it'd be very unlikely to have such a good ending come about, I mean it's unlikely that the writing would permit us to see an Epilogue with Shephard and LI mourning the lost characters as a good ending. Though I know I would thoroughly enjoy seeing Shephard at a memorial with Tali at his side mourning the casualties of the war.
At any rate this ending just feels more possible than the one we were given. It kinda puts emphasis on the journey and the choices not the same bloody ending regardless.
That being said incorporating all the major choices until now makes one extremely difficult final set of cutscenes to create. So many variables being involved.
