Leliana has four ranks of Steal, so I am robbing people blind. I had a failed attempt on a yellow NPC (it seems that yellows and reds are much harder to steal from?) which I didn't reload for. A little while later I had an encounter with some Dalish who were angry with me for stealing from the Dalish, so I am assuming this is from the failed attempt? Or is this from any amount of successful stealing?

I got an item with a name like "bad luck token", whose description says that it circulates and ends up in the hands of thieves sooner or later, that it is cursed and you can't get rid of it. I immediately destroyed it from my inventory and it seems to be gone. Hopefully any negative effect is gone as well.

So it appears that there are consequences for stealing. Does this escalate to anything I really need to worry about?

Can I steal repeatedly from the same NPCs? Are the rewards better for stealing later in the game?

I'm new to this whole crime thing :bandit: and I'm looking for a few tips.

Stealthing before stealing increases your chance to steal as well.

I've been wondering about this myself. Actually, I'm wondering if it's really worth stealing. I picked a few pockets and just came up with some cash and the bad luck token. Since I've never been hurting for money in this game, I didn't see the point.

I get lots of "stealing success" but don't get anything -- sometimes I get a little cash. I see people saying they make big money stealing. I can't figure it out.

If you fail a steal check, just try again. There are no repercussions to failing.

I also enjoy:

Self: Attacked by a melee attack    Use ability: Pickpocketing

As the first tactic on the list of any thief with a high enough skill.

If you don't see cash showing up, you should see "new item". If you sort items by newest, you will sometimes see the new item. I am assuming that if you pickpocket an elfroot or something, it just silently gets stacked with the others (and does not promote the stack to the head of the newest list).

I had a similar tactic on Leliana on my first playthrough, but then I started to wonder, do enemies still drop loot when they die if you have stolen from them? Had lots of enemies not dropping any loot.

This has been my experience WoodsDweller. If you open your inventory and mouse-over everything you will remove the yellow highlight around items. If you then go on a stealing spree and open you inventory, sort by newest, and browse you will see all the new items you just received highlighted in yellow. Even stacks of current large volume items.

In addition, I have had great luck stealing from quartermasters and merchants. The quartermaster in Ostagar had a really nice belt, and the "mean" merchant in Lothering had a nice crossbow.

I was wondering the same thing:

Can u loot a dead body after you already stole from the enemy during a fight?

Not sure about that specifically. Try it out. But personally I don't generally find stealing worth it. There;s nothing tasty to steal in the beginning part of the game, and that's generally the only time you'll be needing extra cash. Should never be a high priority for your XP points, IMHO.
