I think the idea of a relationship not working out is great...if its planned right. And if you have a male equivalent.

What I don't get is why Femshep was struck down so harshly in this game. They already 'knew' Thane was going to die. While fans of Thane might have hoped for a cure, they at least knew there was a possibility. Jacob went from being one of the only LIs to say he loved Shepard, to cheating. They struck off two romance options for no real reason.

They did a great job with Garrus' romance. I never planned to romance anyone else. But it makes me feel somewhat guilty when a good chunk of my friends were romancing Thane, or hoping for Joker/Vega/ect.

Edit: Also, it struck me as odd that he seems to think Shepard's "love" is the Normandy. In ME2, Shepard even says dismissively that 'nothing on this ship is the old Normandy.'. And other than being proud of his ship, he doesn't show any sign of being obsessed with it.

Why should the ending be another story? To me, it's exactly the same thing. Do you play video game romances so you can experience heartbreak and failure? I certainly don't. I want victory and I want a HEA with my love interest. If manShep had to go through the same thing, okay. I wouldn't like it, but it would be equal and I could deal. The treatment is not the same, and that's my chief complaint.

well the ending kills 3 games if you ask me  but this doesn't.  I can see how it would ****** you off but doesn't kill it.   I like the realism though kind of make the charecters seem alive.  Should be more equal though.

Not to mention that on the next convo in the hospital Jacob mentions that they will name the baby after you... Thanks man. That didn't hurt at all...

When I found out that scene plays out exactly the same no matter what, I was like, wow.  That is awful.

There are some pretty horrible combo's of romanced and un-romanced material there. It could have been ok, I guess, if there was a bit of roleplaying attached to it. Now it's basically Brynn telling you that she's stealing Jacob even if he still loves FemShep, and then you have to save her. After that they didn't fix the convo at the hospital so, yeah, they are naming the baby after FemShep.

So how about that realism. If you had started a new relationship with someone already involved. Would you name your firstborn after the person that you cheated. Jacob even says that he acted like a jerk. Better hope the kid never asks why he/she was named that specific name. But then.... don't forget.

Jacob(to his dumped former GirlFriend): Brynn want's to name the kid after you. But I'm talking her out of it. No offence
Dumped FemShep: None taken...

Nope, there was some offence taken at that point... plenty in fact. Sadly I can't say so in game.

Kinda made me feel like Garrus is supposed to be the "canon" romance. That's fantastic for people that like him that way, but he is still pretty much a bro to my femSheps.

First reaction: HA HA.
Second reaction: Ah, they should have some different options for that. Seduce him (Paragon) or shoot Brynn (Renegade). That would've been so funny xD

This.

We had Garrus, man. GARRUS.

Thane was nice too. Not particularily my type, but nice. I'm more sorry for his fans.

Garrus gets squadmate of the year.

I guess if I liked Jacob and have romance with him I would be royally pissed.

I love Garrus:wub: true love<3 I know BW would never do that to his character, because he is so popular, but if Garrus told me: "hey, I got one turian girl pregnant and want to settle down with her" my head would explode. ಠ_ಠ
And then the crying would begin ;)

I waited for continuation of my romance for two years. I read fanfics, look at art and had so much fun with it. I am a Garrus-fangirl with all my heart. If that would be Jacob instead of Garrus... God I have no idea what I would do.

Male gamer here.

I think that was one of the most annoying parts of Mass Effect 3.

Female Shepards basically had two romances invalidated in this game.

There's little to no romance specific dialogue with Thane, and Jacob cheats on Shepard. Straight women are only left with Garrus, and Kaidan.

Garrus might be popular, but there was still an impressive fan following for Thane in the romance department.

Romances themselves cater to a tiny amount of the fanbase that actually engage in this subplots. The fact that Bioware ignored Jacob's romance is beyond baffling. It's like if they said they weren't adding anything new to the adept class, just using it as an example, because only a tiny amount of players actually use it. That's never been how they worked.

First Jacob. Next class? Who knows? We might all be forced to play as one class in future Bioware games, because the others didn't appeal to a wide enough demographic.

That's only reason I can think of for why Bioware did this to Jacob.

Jacob was my romance on my second playthrough. I didn't yet know he was a cheating jerk. To make matters worse, I had already turned everyone else down on the Citadel when I went to save him and found out he was cheating. So I had to complete the game single and bitter.

Thank God Garrus was my first playthrough or the ending wouldn't have been all Bioware got a piece of my mind over.

Femshep got screwed over. Thane dies and you don't even get a paramour achievement for meeting up with him and finding some alone time, and Jacob's a cheating ass that you can't throw out an airlock. That leaves straight femshep with Kaidan or Garrus (and only if they romanced him in 2).

I started a fresh game in ME 2 just so I could force him into the tubes during the suicide mission. "What do you mean you have no tech skill? Get in the damn tube!" It made me feel better.

I never romanced him, but I gotta say it's a gutsy yet realistic move on their part. Not every long-distance relationship is going to end perfectly, and every relationship has its risks. BioWare is actually transferring the pain of relationship drama through the game and into the user, which not many have accomplished.

This hurts you.

I didn't romance Jacob and I'm disappointed in him! We got a bar on the Normandy, I imagine my Shep and I were brofisting the entire trip. And then he turns out to be the kind of guy to get cold feet and knock up someone else? What the hell, man? What happened to bros before hos?

I never romanced him, found him annoying and creepy from the beginning, but part of me still would've liked the option to kick him in the quad for cheating on some femsheps in parallel universes.

I notice a lot of people here defending the decision on the grounds of "realism".

When the hell did people start judging video game romances based on how realistic they are? People generally like video game romances because they're overly perfect and idealized, not because they're realistic in any way.

Hell, my first thought when Liara started mentioning Feron was "Who the **** is this guy?". Thankfully that turned out decently. Had they done the same crap with her as they did with Jacob I would not be pleased. At all.

So, for you Jacobmancers, I feel for you.
