take a look at this comment: http://social.biowar...58945/1#9660802
there is far more to the game that is lacking than just the ending. many people are saying "Herp derp remember the other 99% that was amazing though!!"
just to list a few of the things wrong with the game in shorter form than that post:
- the massive amount of drive-by quests you get from the citadel. all they are is go to random planets and scan then return to someone on the citadel. all you get for these quests by the way is war assets, we'll get to that later
- the scanning itself is rather tedious. there is the illusion of some sort of gameplay to it by the reapers chasing you out, but you simply exit and re-enter the zone mashing scan until you are finished. there is also very little story or well.. anything at all even after you scan something. at least ME2 had missions you could come across while scanning.
- the start of the game. what the hell is up with it? it just seems incredibly underwhelming. nothing is explained. you go from mass effect 2's ending to... on earth by yourself without a ship not in the military. and no explanation is ever given. then all of a sudden the reapers show up - now what has shepard been doing this whole time? oh just relaxing. and instantly everyone looks at you and goes oh what do we doooooo and then you head off to relax on the citadel while earth dies.
- the kid dream sequences. what the hell? where does the kid even come into anything. its a random kid you saw at the start of the game.. and he becomes some sort of weird focus for the rest of the game. for no reason other than to annoy you. not to mention that after one of the dream sequences you are FORCED into the dialogue option telling Liara that you "miss Kaidan".. no i dont.
- kai leng. what the hell is this guy? why is he even in the game? like the post i linked says, he is the jar jar binks of mass effect.
- controls are absolutely terrible thanks to everything being bound to spacebar. on multiplayer this is especially relevant when you are jumping between 2 covers dieing while trying to rez someone.
- the crucible. just the main story in general really. nothing is explained. hell, you arent even on screen for most of it. you just show up on mars and liara says "oh by the way, theres this thing i found while you were gone, we should probably spend the rest of the game building it without ever telling you what it is or seeing it ourselves" .. not to mention that the entire alliance doesn't know what it does either and they built it. just ridiculous.
- length of the game. both of the other mass effect games individually were at least 2-3x longer than this one.
- how do i hold all these plot holes?!
- the epic DLC that everyone warred over the internet saying they would boycot the game due to it not being included. what was it again? oh right a crappy character with little relevance to the story and a 5-10minute mission.
- and finally, the war assets. i honestly don't even know - do these matter? do they ever come into play? because i have no idea how the ending movie could POSSIBLY be affected by any of them. you know why? because the ending movie shows **** all. it literally shows nothing in the story. it is.. useless. and its all we get. where are our war assets? does the multiplayer "readiness" crap even do anything, because all the stuff you acquired over the games sure don't do anything either way thanks to the ending.
finally i'd just like to ask. why does the ending even mention that the mass relays get destroyed? i don't understand that. its like they just threw that in there out of nowhere. yeah all AIs will be destroyed if you go down this path.. OH BY THE WAY THE RELAYS ALL BLOW UP TOO. what why? that doesn't even make sense. in fact the only thing that does is further convolute how bad the ending is because everyone is trapped in the sol system, and yet they don't even mention it or explain anything.
Not only the Ending was done poorly..
