Hello everyone,

As of today, I have set an end goal for our fundraiser at $80,000.

The very idea that we would even be able to reach that goal was a fever dream only a week ago.  I don't believe anyone can or should consider this effort to have been anything but spectacularly successful.  As evidenced by the statement from Dr. Myzuka yesterday, we have made our voices heard.  Those of you here have taken special care to be heard in a polite, positive manner, and I believe that this is a major contributor to that success.

We have shown our sincerity and passion.  We have brought positive attention to the Retake Mass Effect movement.

Make no mistake.  This effort has been victorious.

I have been in contact with a manager at Child's Play.  First, he wanted to stress how grateful they were for our efforts here, and the huge impact it will have in helping the charity.  However, he pointed out that several sources are incorrectly assuming a link between the charity and the petition, or outright support of the petition by the charity.  This has been a source of difficulty for them, and it has been requested that we wind this effort down.  Again, I want to stress that the charity is not unhappy with our work, they are exceptionally pleased with what we have accomplished.

There will be conspiracy theorys regarding this.  Many of the public statements by Penny Arcade have been dismissive or outright derogatory of our effort.  I believe this is a failure on their part to understand our issues, but they are entitled to their opinion.  Regardless, I want to stress that I do not believe for one second that this is an attempt by anyone at Penny Arcade to silence this movement.

I also want you all to know I am acting unilaterally in this decision.  I have been provided many eloquent arguments against winding down the drive and I appreciate them.  In the end, however, I believe that now is the time for this phase of the process to come to an close.

Retake Mass Effect is not over by any means; Dr. Myzuka's statement was welcome, but did not directly address our concerns.  You have been heard.  Now it is time to make sure they get the details right :)

I will be taking a break from BSN for a time.  My sincerest thanks to everyone who has supported this effort whether through donations, publicity, or kind words.  Special thanks to the core group here who kept this thread polite, positive, and on track.

I hope to soon have an archive of the comments made on the ChipIn page located at www.wewillholdtheline.org.

To everyone here - my thanks, and I salute you.

Sincerely,

Robb

Questions that have been brought up that I would like to address here:

When does the donated money go to Child's Play?

Right when you donate. All of the money raised goes directly to Child's Play. You are basically making a direct Paypal transaction with donate@childsplaycharity.org. The only thing that ChipIn does is to track how many people have donated and how much. There is no "goal" amount, there is no turning back. Regardless of the outcome of the petition, your donations are going to the charity.

How can I verify that this is legitimate?

Jaime Dillion, project manager at Child's Play, has graciously agreed to answer any concerns you have in terms of donations reaching Child's Play. Contact at jdillion@childsplaycharity.org.

-----

This thread is to discuss a donation drive to the Child's Play charity in order to bring positive attention to our respectful requests for an alternate ending to the Mass Effect series.

Child's Play is a charity which provides game hardware and software to Children's Hospitals around the world.  It was created by gamers and for gamers.

We are coordinating donations via the ChipIn service which acts as a neutral party to ensure all donations make it directly to the Child's Play charity.  ChipIn is the service officially recognized by Child's Play for coordination of online donation drives.  It also ensures that the donations are in the name of the cause and not any other party.  Donations can be made via Paypal.

Regardless of the outcome of this petition, we are proud to be fans of Mass Effect, and to support Child's Play.

This has leaped far beyond what I ever thought it might.  Thank you all who have supported this thread, regardless of your donation status.

Thank you.

I personally was very impressed by the charity drive and proud of all the community members who participated. Thank you for the good thing you did for the kids.

Now, let's stop it with the conspiracy theories, baseless accusations, and blame, and, if you guys still want to do something constructive with your movement, then do something constructive with it instead of wallowing in something that capped off a "very good thing to do." You guys should be proud of yourselves.

So does that make you a Peeping Stanley?

No seriously, thanks for all you've done. Some people need a boot every now and then to remind them to remain civil.

And that's what I'm here for. That, and to occasionally remind folks that there are actual living people behind these BioWare tags and working within the BioWare and EA organizations, people with jobs and hobbies, families and kids, likes and dislikes. And probably ponies!

Also, I like pie. Thanks for keeping things 99.99999999999926% civil, Retake movement. i'll say it again: you done a good thing for the kids.

Hey, not over yet. I'm donating again on this pay, if the chipin page decides to work for me.

Wait I've somehow missed something havent' I.

Yes, the page has disappeared and the organized donation drive has ended. but please don't let that stop you from donating on your own. The organization will still appreciate it all the same. :)

This is a reminder to notify a Moderator directly if you see trouble on the forums.

This is also a reminder that we have a very specific definition of "troll" in our forums, and it doesn't mean someone who "disagrees with me" or "argues with me" or "says something I don't like." The term is reserved for those who intentionally make outlandish hyperbolic posts, usually on a controversial or sensitive topic, for the sole purpose of provoking an extreme reaction.

Indeed. Calling someone a troll is often, in itself, trolling. Let's keep things civil.

No, it is not. but it is name-calling and not permitted in our community, according to our Site Rules.

Oh come on, leave the Donation opened. 80k is amazing, but you should have shot for 100k. Or left the Donations without a goal cap until we get the new ending and see how much we'd make. Seeing the -goal already met- part slows donations and Child's Play needs a lot more then 80k all and all. 80k is barely enough to help one hospital.

Unfortunately it wasn't up to us, Childs Play itself requested we cap it. So it was not a choice we really had, as sad as it is you move on and find somewhere else to channel your energy. Which is what were doing, coming up with new ideas!

Holding The Line,

Very close. According to UniqueName, Child's Play asked him to wind it down, so he capped it at $80,000 to do so, since the drive had already raised that amount. That would stop new donations from coming in, and then the page was removed. This is what I have gathered based on everything I've read about it.

@An earlier comment. I'm afraid that I'm not here to "help" the movement anymore than I am here to "hinder" it. I am here to keep things on the straight and narrow, and this thread is kept open mostly to prevent a jillion threads on the subject. I sympathize with your cause, understand your motivations and frustrations, and wish your group all the best, but my participation in this discussion should not be taken as official sanction or support from BioWare.

All comments made herein are my personal opinion and do not necessarily reflect the views of BioWare or EA.

And when you guys are ready for the next step, I am happy to lock this thread and let you guys open a new one with a new title, if the current title and OP cannot be changed.

I didn't want my money back. I wanted the drive to go on and not stop because of some bloody fools.

So that more children could be helped, or so that more attention would be given to the Retake movement and there'd be a greater chance BioWare would listen and do something about it? If you answered the latter, then consider that you may, in fact, have been using the charity for your own cause, and as Tycho wrote, Child's Play is the cause.

The "bloody fools" were asking questions and raising concerns that may have put the organization's mission in jeopardy, risking future donations and their ability to do what they were created to do, which is to help sick kids in the hospital feel better with videogames and toys and books and stuff. So they kindly and respectfully asked for the (unsolicited) Retake fund drive to wind down, please and thank you.

Any other "mission" or "cause" or "reason" to support the charity is yours, not theirs.

And I will ask you to keep your name-calling, insults and "sensationalist hyperbole" to yourself when you disagree with someone. Thank you.

And now this thread is pretty much fulfilled its purpose and is off-topic.

End of line.
