We should definitely not change anything in writing about this movement, it started out as Retake Mass Effect, it should end as Retake Mass Effect. Maybe next year we can name it Retook Mass Effect? =D

Hells yea. :)

And I am just as strongly against this remove, with the caveat that it's not my choice.  This is how it started, channeling what normally would've been destructive raging into something positive.  To try and hide that root now would just make it look like we are ashamed and prove that all the journalist acting like children were right.

I can definitely understand that reasoning. But it's not about hiding anything, it just opens up the charity drive to the entire community. And as much as I hate what the gaming media is doing to the Retake movement, I think there's no point in giving them even more reasons to target us.

I can see that happening too.
We remove "Retake" and set the charity up for the Mass Effect community as a whole and in response get "Fanbase tries to misrepresent themselves as speaking for everyone in underhanded charity drive!"
Yeah, heck with that. Keep it as-is or make some wording enhancements gets my vote.

I don't think we have anything to feel bad about here.  We took our frustration about the ending and decided that instead of just moaning about it we would do something postive.  A workthy charity is getting some much needed donation and attention as a result.  The people saying we are using this as an excuse to complain some more have clearly not been here to read everyones comments.  Hard to blame them with a 100+  pages.

When I first completed the game I wasn't sure how to react or even how to respond. As far as I was concerned I thought I lost it being so emotionally attached to the game. Then, I just decided to go looking out on the web to see if there was any decisions that I could of made in game to give me better closure on what happened, to give me understanding on the outcomes and consequences. There was nothing, that was it, and it was final. That is when I found this forum and no longer felt that I was crazy for so being invested in a game anymore. We all form relationships (not strictly romantic) with things around us be it your friends, a dog, that object that a family member gave/passed to you, and even characters in a book. When those relationships end we want to know why it ended and we will bemoan, rage, wonder, explore, track down, or a myriad of other ways to understand what happened. For me that is all I every wanted is to understand what happened to all those relationships (again doesn't have to be romantic) that I made in a span of three games. Kill off characters I don't care but tell me why they died and what for, make them disappear but tell me where the went and why the left, have them survive but tell me for what purpose and for what consequence. So I will hold the line .

We don't have anything to worry about. It is called Corporate Social Responsibility, although we are not technicaly incorporated, the idea still stands. A company or a group of people doing something god for a community or another group of people hoping to show that they aren't the weasely batrastards everyone else says.

It is a legitimate means of garnering public support and is actively taught in university business programs.

Great cause! I'm siding with some alternative theories about the end, but helping out child's play to make it clear we want more.. done.

I have indeed been thinking about ways to make this an annual thing :)

In thinking about it, though, I realized that a fundraiser, even for a video game charity like Child's Play, and even in relation to a Bioware game like Mass Effect, is probably outside of the normal conduct they tolerate on the BSN.

I updated the front page acknowledgements but I'd also like to say it here: Thank you Bioware for letting us do this, we understand that you didn't have to, and I really appreciate it.

There are several ways this could become an annual thing, but I've decided that it is probably not a topic for discussion on these forums. Of course, I will be recruiting here, rest assured.

Just some responses from the Gamespot forums.  They share the opinion that we are being manipulative and entitled.  DAMN RIGHT WE'RE ENTITLED.  Almost all of us have spent $160+ on Mass Effect.  Don't feed the trolls, don't break down to criticism, don't lose sight of the amazing thing we are doing.

Hold the line!

This right here...  WE are Retake Mass Effect. That is what brought us together, and as quoted that is how we should end..

Also 128 dollars away from 40,000

In regards to changing the stated purpose of the fundraiser - I have considered it, but I am not currently planning to for three reasons:

1. I don't believe the people who are criticizing us have valid arguments
2. To back down now would be to validate those false arguments
3. People here seem to support keeping them :)

Once again, if ever a consensus emerges here that something needs to change in the ChipIn page or the front page of this post, I will probably make that change.  For now though, I plan to leave things as they are.

I've donated too. I finished ME3 last night and even though I probably got the "best" ending (synthesis), I was unsatisfied. I was planning on doing a New Game+ after the ending but seeing the ending made me feel really bad and I don't feel like doing another run.

On the plus side, at least there's the multiplayer, which is fun and I can see myself going back to play.

Hold that line, Unique!

I agree with keeping the principle of the drive going. We have beef but we're channeling it in a productive way. We've raised $40,000 in a little less than 2 days. That's unbelievably cool.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help =).  I'm not exactly photoshop skilled or html literate.  But I can devote inordinate amount of time to causes I believe in and focus WAY too much on uneven numbers :bandit:.

And now, because I can and because I am a fan of their work, a comment on the Penny Arcade guys reactions.

I like Tycho's response. Although he appreciated the endings, he did not make a blanket statement as so many others have that anyone who did not is "wrong" somehow. I do chafe a bit at the insinuation that if we were merely a bit better read, we too would have been able to appreciate the current ending.

I do, of course, completely agree with him that it is wrong to say that the endings cannot be criticized.

On Gabe's response, though, I call bull@#$%.

Gabe

The book has been written and you can change the way you read it but don’t pretend you’re the author.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but the entire Mass Effect series has been all about creating the story the player wants. "Don't pretend you're the author" is a statement which doesn't match up with the advertised and expected themes of the series.

I actually think Tycho, on Monday, said it better than I ever could:

Tycho

The reaction to the endings is an index of player investment and seeming ownership over the narrative, years in the making, and is as much Bioware’s creation as the game itself.

We are Bioware's own creation. They told us over and over that the choices were ours to make.

And I'm not going to give that up no matter how much I like anyone's work at Penny Arcade :)

And from everything i have seen those that have been upset/frustrated have experienced a type of catharsis by donating. It has turned those negative feelings into something good.

If you check on the donation site and I believe on the OP, you get pointed to Jamie Dillion, a project manager at Child's Play who said he's happy to verify that this cause is legit. Here is his contact address: jdillion@childsplaycharity.org

You also get a receipt from Child's Play after the donation. Hope that helps.=]
