I like Tycho's response. Although he appreciated the endings, he did not make a blanket statement as so many others have that anyone who did not is "wrong" somehow. I do chafe a bit at the insinuation that if we were merely a bit better read, we too would have been able to appreciate the current ending.
From what I've seen it's those who actually understand the art of storytelling who have problems with the endings i.e. the better read. In most cases, those in support of the current finale rarely comment on its use of deus ex machina, the lack of internal logic (even just within that one scene), the total abandonment or even reversal of recurring themes, or the inexplicable change in the character of the protagonist.
Most counter-arguments to the widespread fan displeasure begin and end at "I enjoyed it, so shut up", though in Tycho's case his version is "I enjoyed it, and so would you if you were a cleverdick like me". It's just as vacouous as the other dismissals because it adresses none of the problems with the events that unfold in the story.
He focuses instead on the "Interesting Questions" as if these excuse all the other problems. Surely if he'd been paying attention while playing, he'd have realised that these questions were not only trite and hackneyed, but completely inappropriate when following the preceding events. As someone who's acting as if he's approaching it from a balanced, intellectual position, there's a dearth of critical analysis in his appraisal. Well, not enough to make the claims he does (in my opinion).
I retract most of that - I was in a momentary grump. His appraisal is actually quite fair. I just happen to disagree.
