A suggestion: whoever has been doing the great banners should make up a new one to commemorate the end, to celebrate the 80k we raised before getting shut down. I'll proudly put one in my sig.

So would I! (saddly I suck at making anything of the kind so I can only hope someone else feels up to it B))

Well, Sure, I'll do my part, thats what Im here for. Its just that without the charity to sort of be our flagship and say "this is how much support we've gotten, there are A LOT of us" we're going to get regarded to as the minority again. Its going to be "all talk" from the point where the charity ends.. Ive seen it happen many many times and it just makes me sad.

I really dont see how this drive is causing trouble for anyone if the official retake mass effect chip in page had all the info on there to confirm that we're not affiliated with anyone and that we're just organizing this as a fan base to make our voices heard.

I really dont want to think that ea/bioware had contacted them and said "hey, you either shut them up or we pull our support, theyre getting too loud now", but its a possible theory, is it not?

Because trolls will be trolls, will be trolls.  There are some despicable people out there.

They stopped it?! Because of hate mail?!

Child's Play may have caved and showed they were truly cowards but I sincerely hope that those of us who were involved will continue to promote this petition

Allow me to quote Churchill.

"You have enemies? Good. That means you have stood up for something, sometime in your life."

Lets keep holding the line.

Hey everyone, I want to echo what has been said recently.

We did raise a lot of money for Child's Play and those sick, scared children in the hospitals will at least have some happiness thanks to the money we raised.

I am saddened a bit, however, that our charity drive had so many "enemies". Why would people be against raising money for children? I contacted "Child's Play" and was informed that the main reason they requested us to stop the drive was because they were getting tons of "hate" mail.

So, while we were acting civil and doing something positive, the people standing against us lashed out in the worst way possible - and - it seems that had a bigger impact than our positive, civil protest/petition.

Child's Play even indicated they plan to change the way people can donate to them in the future to prevent this from happening again.

I am debating contacting Forbes with this information. It seems being "Paragons of Protest" was fine and good - but the real influence behind shutting down the charity drive, attempting to raise money for kids - was "Hate" mail. It's not like this was a widely political - world changing event. It isn't abortion rights, or the world economy - it is the end of a video game. Captialism. BioWare has every right to change - or not change the ending - as they see fit, and they must deal with the consequences (more sales, or perhaps less sales in the future) as a result.

I am proud to be standing with all of you and holding the line in a civil, courteous manner, it looks however, like the "hate" mail tactics - are heard louder by the folks at Child's Play.

Hold the line.

Please do contact Forbes with this if you can. It needs to be talked about. We can Hold the Line!

Yes, do let Forbes know. Someone out there at least should be made aware of the truth to this before some other "journalists" who don't like research decide to make some other bogus story out of us winding the charity down...

Not sure what to think about passing the truth on to Erik Kain/Forbes. It's pretty infuriating, but I don't want to create more problems for the Retake movement or for Child's Play.

I believe that someone should.

Hi Unique,

I'm truly troubled by you post of two hours ago stated that the charity drive is being wound down at the request of the charity as they are not happy about being associated with us?

But they'll keep the money that has been donated and disavow the motivation behind it?

It feels like a kick to the teeth as they are essentially saying "Yeah, we'll keep the money you gave us and thanks so much for the awareness of our charity you brought, now don't let the door hit you in the rear on the way out."

I donated heavily, twice - taking some of my gaming money and reallocating funds I give to worthy organiztions in my community because I felt so strongly this was a good cause in support of an good goal.

I'm now questioning my donation to this organization, as any charity that would be so unkind to benefactors is not a group I care to be affiliated with.

This has taken the one thing that brought happiness to me over the whole ME3 debacle and thrown it away.

I will find another way to help kids, I always have, but I'll do so with an organization that is glad to have the money I'm giving them for the reasons I've selected.

Truly, I'm very very upset.

I'm sad to see this go; hitting 100k would have been downright amazing. But wherever the negativity that's been going around is coming from, it seems only right to keep the charity's best interests in mind. I was very happy to have been able to contribute though and I will continue to hold the line!

Yeah, these 'journalists' will probably say that now Bioware have said they're going to do something about the ending we've stopped donating to charity, which couldn't be further from the truth.

This is really quite incredible, and a wonderfully sweet and effective way to register a complaint. You've turned dissapointment and vitriol into happiness for children, like some sort of crazy internet alchemist.

Someone needs to.

If Child's Play wants to back out of this because of hate mail then they deserve to take some flak for it.  I like the organization and its cause but they were wrong to do this and need to be held accountable.

I Know this is a depressing blow everyone, I know it feels like we were just beaten but we can't permit our momentum to die down. Anything we donate too in the name of RTM3 is going to get that same hate mail, in one fell swoop they've shut us down. That being said I sincerely want to say report this to Forbes, let the world know what kind of people are making us be silent...but then the non-enraged portion of my mind, the one that doesn't want to nuke 90% of the worlds population so the scum can go rot and the good people can live on, reminds me quietly that in doing so we'd hurt Childs Play. Of course I think they've just hurt themselves by limiting the ability to donate to anomyous only, no company will donate without being recgonized. It saddens me that they did this, not for them...the people running that have proven to me to be quite cowardly and unable to discern a few hundred people sending copies of letters and truely good people, the latter of which will be remembered in coming years. And being unable to say "Oh well for them." But the Kids will suffer because of that same blindness, truely I weep, I cry for those who are hurt and yet have done no wrongs aside being sick. Mercy upon Humanity's soul.

All that being said, We must mantain the line, do whatever we can to get our message out there. Offer up Interviews if you can, direct people to the threads that matter, UN is putting up a site with all the information and all the comments from the ChipIn, hopefully we can use that...Childs Play and it's...inability to deal with Hate Mail cannot silence us on a private web site.

If anyone needs to be held accountable, its those who would be so despicable as to send hate mail to a kid's charity.  We need to make that the story.  We do NOT need to be seen as lashing out against a kids charity organization.

However, they do need to take some flak for this cowardice.

Despite my previous post, lets try to turn this into something positive. Eighty Thousand dollars is nothing to sneeze at by far! Cmon guys, chin up, Hold The Line, if Bioware DID do something here and we know the supporters of the ending did something assuredly, lets show them we aren't so easily bested. Lets show them that were PROUD of what we did.

Hello everyone,

As of today, I have set an end goal for our fundraiser at $80,000.

The very idea that we would even be able to reach that goal was a fever dream only a week ago.  I don't believe anyone can or should consider this effort to have been anything but spectacularly successful.  As evidenced by the statement from Dr. Myzuka yesterday, we have made our voices heard.  Those of you here have taken special care to be heard in a polite, positive manner, and I believe that this is a major contributor to that success.

We have shown our sincerity and passion.  We have brought positive attention to the Retake Mass Effect movement.

Make no mistake.  This effort has been victorious.

I have been in contact with a manager at Child's Play.  First, he wanted to stress how grateful they were for our efforts here, and the huge impact it will have in helping the charity.  However, he pointed out that several sources are incorrectly assuming a link between the charity and the petition, or outright support of the petition by the charity.  This has been a source of difficulty for them, and it has been requested that we wind this effort down.  Again, I want to stress that the charity is not unhappy with our work, they are exceptionally pleased with what we have accomplished.

There will be conspiracy theorys regarding this.  Many of the public statements by Penny Arcade have been dismissive or outright derogatory of our effort.  I believe this is a failure on their part to understand our issues, but they are entitled to their opinion.  Regardless, I want to stress that I do not believe for one second that this is an attempt by anyone at Penny Arcade to silence this movement.

I also want you all to know I am acting unilaterally in this decision.  I have been provided many eloquent arguments against winding down the drive and I appreciate them.  In the end, however, I believe that now is the time for this phase of the process to come to an close.

Retake Mass Effect is not over by any means; Dr. Myzuka's statement was welcome, but did not directly address our concerns.  You have been heard.  Now it is time to make sure they get the details right :)

I will be taking a break from BSN for a time.  My sincerest thanks to everyone who has supported this effort whether through donations, publicity, or kind words.  Special thanks to the core group here who kept this thread polite, positive, and on track.

I hope to soon have an archive of the comments made on the ChipIn page located at www.wewillholdtheline.org.

To everyone here - my thanks, and I salute you.

Sincerely,

Robb

Find it in you, raise your eyes
Look beyond the place you stand
Towards the furthest reaches
And to the smallest of things
The sound you are hearing
Is the symphony of what we are
Revelation will not come
With heart and mind closed and divided

No need of sun to light the way
Across the ages, we have reigned as we endured
Through the storm fronts we will ever surely pass
To stand as never ending light

No need to trash the charity or get all conspiracy theory on this.
We look foolish when we blame folks for this and have no evidence to back it up, it's reckless and irresponsible.

Why? Many were assuming that Child's Play was in some way supporting our position, while it was not doing so in any way. And the fact that we caused them to receive hate mail is a real shame.

It just doesnt make sense. So what, hatemail? c'mon, I mean they must've had that all the time like any other organization! Stopping the movement doesnt make sense unless someone pushed them to do so. And I will not point fingers at who I think did it.

Im okay with the donation that I have made, but yes, It feels wrong that we're cut short. Its like being denied rights to something. You dont get put in jail because of a complaint, right?

And why did UN suddenly decide to take a break? Because he didnt want us to try to convince him not to shut down the charity? Or maybe he felt a ish-storm that was on its way due to what happened? (not tryin to bash you UN, just frustrated is all).

I amost feel like starting something else up, but that would be dumb and pointless "oh look, another charity. trying to mimick the one before."

meh, guys.. Im sad now :(
