Wait a minute... what happened? Pro-enders complained to the guys at Child's Play and annoyed them enough to shut it down or... was someone else complaining? Why the hell should ANYONE complaining matter in this situation? What the **** does a couple of antagonistic emails, no matter from whom it may be, matter when 80K is raised for charity? Who the hell do these guys think they are?
It was more like inaccurate journalism attributing the goals of the Retake charity to Child's Play itself. PR is everything for charities and not for profits. At some point, it was going to negatively effect Child's Play, so they decided to respectually request that UN wrap things up. Not animosity. No hostility. The negative PR from the trashier gaming media just got to be a little too risky.

Oh alright, thanks. I still think this is incredibly ridiculous that a charity for little kids would shut down something that made them $80,000 in little over a week and was still going strong if they truly cared about the kids over potentially looking bad from a few whiny folks.
I understand they want to avoid bad PR but Jesus, it's not like we're representing the **** Party of America here.
edit - Okay... why is that censored?

This unfortunately. I have done a lot of work with CP Rochester and it all boils down to PR. If at any point a charity is placed in too risky a situation that may affect their income they will have to distance themselves. It really hurts/sucks to have this happen( i was planning on donating some more now that i finally have some spare money on friday).. But i understand and respect their position.

At any rate, I respect the decision to end the charity early, and we had a discussion about it. Thank you all for your donations, and for everything you've done for the charity, and don't worry. This isn't the last you've seen of us...

Seriously, can someone explain to me what the heck happened? The guys running Child's Play received some hatemail from some group and because of that, shut this donation drive down? Boo hoo, some folks shouted at them and they turned tail and shut down: who cares if we could've doubled that amount by the time it was over? Who cares about those sick little brats, amirite?
Seriously this is ridiculous.
My guess would be that since non-profit organizations want to look neutral, people associating them with the petition would make them seem biased. Not exactly the best image. The fact that people would actually send hate mail to a charity makes me sick, but I understand why CP made this decision.

I mean if we're to be held responsible for everyone who associates themselves with us, doesn't that work both ways?
Who the hell sends hate mail to a charity?

I definitely don't regret donating. 80,000 is one of the largest fan-based charities I've seen. People should be insanely proud.

The quick summary is media mis-represented the charity as being a supporter of the retake movement so that the charity ended up in the middle of a polarising argument where then some people who make me want to puke wrote them hate mail etc., and they felt it might be best to end our drive earlier than intended before it got more out of control since it's usually best for a charity to be seen as a neutral party.... which they are, of course, but apparently some people (incl. some journalists) don't grasp the concept of a cause raising funds for a charity not meaning that the charity conversely supports the cause...
But, we helped a lot of kids and we showed that we can channel our energy into something positive with amazing results. I feel sad as a human being that there are people out there who would hate on a charity because someone they don't agree with donates to them, but nothing can change or take away the fact that we raised a buttload of money that will help kids.
Proud to hold the line!

The first contact I had with Child's Play was via the Humble Indie Bundle, where I paid a sum of my choosing to receive a wonderful bundle of indie games and some of the funds paid went to the Child's Play charity. I've supported most of the bundles since then. It's been a win-win situation: I get great games and the developers and Child's Play get money. One could argue that the charity is cheapened from the fact that I get a product to enjoy, but I would argue that this is not the case.
I don't see how giving to Child's Play to show that I want a better ending for Mass Effect 3 is somehow worse than this. I am not abusing the charity or claiming any support for my wishes on the part of the charity. I am simply trying to show my feelings in a way that does good for someone beyond myself.
I cannot believe that this has been shut down.
What other charities might we consider supporting?
