I'm gonna go against my fellow "leadership peoples" (god it's weird to put myself in that category) on this. I'm with Victoria. If they have a problem with us getting them donations - someone else is more deserving.
I won't ask for my money back, but I can damn well assure you they won't be getting any more from me. There's plenty of other places that would love to have this kind of donation base, whether or not they get mean-spirited e-mails.
So...someone suggested an $80k banner. I don't know if I'm who you were talking to, but I'll go ahead and make one. And if anyone involved in any more efforts want artwork done, I'll be happy to do what I can, whether it's for another charity or something else entirely. Because when I saw the ending, I was heartbroken and hurt...when I saw this drive, I was hopeful and uplifted...when I saw the reaction some people had, I was incredulous and disappointed...and now? Now...I'm angry. Very, very angry...and I don't plan on simply letting that simmer.
What kind of heartless person would want to get their money back from a charity. Regardless on how I feel about the issue iteself. That is just sick. "Here, I want to donate some money." *waits a few days* "NEVERMIND ! YOU GUYS SUCK I WANT MY MONEY BACK!"
That's really bad.

I am very disappointed about the closure of the charity drive.
The first contact I had with Child's Play was via the Humble Indie Bundle, where I paid a sum of my choosing to receive a wonderful bundle of indie games and some of the funds paid went to the Child's Play charity. I've supported most of the bundles since then. It's been a win-win situation: I get great games and the developers and Child's Play get money. One could argue that the charity is cheapened from the fact that I get a product to enjoy, but I would argue that this is not the case.
I don't see how giving to Child's Play to show that I want a better ending for Mass Effect 3 is somehow worse than this. I am not abusing the charity or claiming any support for my wishes on the part of the charity. I am simply trying to show my feelings in a way that does good for someone beyond myself.
I cannot believe that this has been shut down.
What other charities might we consider supporting?

Now we move ahead, and remember the satisfaction of having raised eighty thousand dollars for a good cause. We are a group of people who believe in something very strongly, and we won't stop believing that just because one good deed is now done. We succeeded in a brilliant way.
When that charity was started, did any of us think it would soar so high?
We have proven we are not simply a "Vocal Minority of malcontents." We are a force that can clearly raise money, spend it, and spend it on something we are passionate about. That message has been delivered. Now we simply have to stick to our mantra:
"Hold the Line."

I appreciate this post and majority of what you said is true. Although, I've seen a few (won't say many) that have stated they didn't give out of the kindess of their heart or to turn something negative into a positive. They donated for media attention and that is not something to be proud of.

That's not bad, if the charity doesn't live up to your expectation (how they handle the money or who they choose to be represented with (or not represented with)) it's natural to not give them anymore money and even sometime want to get the money back (Especially if you want to give it to an other organisme that you think will do better with the money you give them)
Plus I don't see when the person you respond to want to get his money back, she just saying she won't donate again to CP and that's normal imo

I'm that person and if you want to believe I'm heartless, that is your perogative. I give 10% of my gross yearly income to charity, and donate hours of my time in support of several worthy organizations. I've started and folded my own non-profit. I sit on the boards of several charities.
My decision to withdraw my 2k donation to Child's Play is that their response leaves me questioning their organiztion. I've never seen a group deny a charity drive by accepting money already raised but kicked future donations to the curb.
It's odd. Non-profits operate in a different world than regular business, and transparency is a key facet.
Since I donated without fully vetting the organization in the heat of the moment and their subsequent action leads me to question their leadership, and thus the successful use of the money I gave, I chose to request the return of the donation.
I immediatetly re-purposed the money to three charities I've worked with for years, including one that sends cancer kids to summer camp.
I also asked CP for a fuller explanation of their choices in this. If there is something I've missed or they can explain their actions, I will glady donate to them in the future.

I'm...crushed, to say the least. I was almost more invested in the charity drive than the actual ending debacle. I felt like we were actually doing something with that, and it had become far more important to me than what brought us all together. I was so excited that we'd come together and done so much and I was eagerly awaiting hitting that $100,000 mark.
Whatever happened, we still did a lot of good, but we had the potential to do a lot more.
80K is still huge, and waaaaaaay more than anyone who was here from the beginning thought that this thing would make. It's really astounding. And I've said this before, but I'll say it again. We owe BW for bringing us together. Their story is responsible for bringing us all together. Personally, I don't agree with starting another charity so soon, but I think we should keep thinking about how we can "hold the line" and show BW that we care enough of about their story to ensure that they give it the epic ending it deserves.

Nice.
Yeah, I think those who understand how charity works and what they are designed to support (as you seem to be) have a lot more options apparent to them. Criticizing your actions without understanding the underlying motivation is pretty unfair.
I won't be withdrawing my donations, but I won't be making any further pledges to Child's Play this year, either. I have my own favorite charities as well, and see no problem with supporting them as I always have.

I heard back from Child's Play. While I will *not* be doing it - they do say they are willing to refund a donation... See below cut and paste from my email...
We are certainly willing to issue refunds to any who request them. They can contact me and I will issue it through Paypal, and I'm happy to do so.
I think there is still a bit of misunderstanding within the community about our issue- not with you, but those who feel we are trying to cut off the RME group. I'll try to explain why this is a difficult issue for us- one that RME wasn't causing, but just brought to light.
For example, if someone took a hotly debated political issue and said "Donate to Child's Play to support [insert issue here]", it could potentially cause some serious issues. Clearly what Retake Mass Effect was doing is in no way negative, it, like I said, created a slippery slope for others to use the charity for agendas we clearly do not support.
Thank you again for getting in touch. We take the concerns of the community very seriously, and I hope that this helps clarify.
Regards,
Jamie
